no sound from onboard or sound card... plz help!
okay. my onboard sound on my gf's dell dimension 4600 (running windows xp home w/SP2) went out a while ago. not sure what caused the problem, but i reinstalled the onboard sound drivers and it didn't fix the problem. device manager shows no problems with the onboard sound (this device is working properly). thinking the onboard sound might of fried, we tried a sound blaster live pci card (model CT4760), downloaded the latest drivers, uninstalled onboard drivers, disabled the onboard sound (through both device manager and BIOS), and that didn't fix the problem either. device manager shows no problems with the sound card either. also, when i open "Sound and Audio Devices" from control panel everything is greyed out. i've tried just about everything in the book, and i can't seem to fix this problem. somebody please help. thanks!

Re: driver re-stack
okay. a few things. i'm not sure if this motherboard is ac'97 based. the chipset is an intel 865G, and the onboard sound driver is SoundMAX. also, i cannot uninstall all of the drivers from add/remove programs, because they're simply not all there. i think i could, however, uninstall them through device manager. i also wanted to know if i absolutely need to uninstall ALL of the drivers. thanks. Re: no sound from onboard or sound card... plz help!
The chip that is responsible for the sound is actually the paired ICH5/ICH5R southbridge (with 865 and 875 core logic), which is indeed AC'97 based.
![]() If you're not able to uninstall drivers from Add/Remove Programs, don't worry about that step. The next step is basically the same as uninstalling every single device from the Device Manager in one step. |

Re: tried the method
well i tried what you said syphus. i sort of just skipped the whole removing the drivers from control panel/device manager since you said the removal of the ACPI Compliant System will do all of that for me. the only program on the control panel that i uninstalled was the sound card driver that i downloaded. after i uninstalled the ACPI System, it turned out that windows installs a lot of the hardware automatically, even if i do close the new hardware dialogue boxes. the automatically installed hardware includes my video card, sound card, and ethernet card (all PCI devices), along with a variety of other devices. i'm not sure, but i think this might be because the sound and video cards are outdated. the sound card is a creative labs sound blaster live! (model CT4760) and the video is ATI RADEON 8500. so maybe windows has bulit-in default drivers for these product models. anyway, after windows auto installed my sound card, control panel is still greyed out. i also tried to install the onboard sound, but it gave me an error: Driver not found! Reboot system, and run the installer again. i did that, but it still gave me the same error. any suggestions? thanks again!

Re: no sound from onboard or sound card... plz help!
The automatic driver re-installation was the unfortunate result of your inability to uninstall the majority of your drivers from the control panel. If these drivers are indeed missing, then you may well have a corrupt registry and need to reinstall Windows to get things running smoothly again.
Just to be clear on something though: Uninstalling a driver from the Device Manager and Uninstalling a driver from Add/Remove Programs are two completely different things. Doing so from the Device Manager will simply remove the driver from the device tree, but it will not physically remove the driver files or the INF entries (what enables Windows to identify a driver). This means that when you reboot, Windows will detect the device again then look for and find the driver files. Drivers that have executable installers will install a load of driver, INF and support files along with an uninstaller before invoking the standard Device Manager installation method. To completely remove the driver, not just from the Device Manager, you have to use the uninstaller that the installer installed...if you follow that ![]() Triple check that the drivers are not in Add/Remove Programs. Drivers might have slightly obscure names, so look carefully. For example, your Radeon graphics card uses drivers called ATI Catalyst. If you can't find them, they're probably missing due to registry corruption. |

Re: no sound from onboard or sound card... plz help!
Well... a couple things that I forgot to mention. The video card I have installed on this computer is actually from an older one, and I did not have the CD to install the drivers/ATI Catalyst for it. Also, I'm almost sure that I never used a downloaded executable to install the card's driver. I know what Catalyst is ( I have it on my other computer with a RAEON 9600xt), and I do not remember installing it. Furthermore, I do not have ATI Catalyst in my Program Files folder or the Control Panel, which, I presume, signifies that I indeed did not install it. Even though, the video card works fine and the DirectX Diagnostic Tool reports that I have the driver "ati2dvag.dll." Considering how I never installed ATI Catalyst, any thoughts of where that driver came from?
The auto installation of other hardware components are the same as the video card: I never installed drivers myself either with a CD or downloaded executable, but they still have drivers and work properly. And regarding the sound card (which was the original problem), I performed a "cleansweep" of the drivers using instructions from the Creative Labs website, which is supposed to remove all of the files related to the sound card (removing from Control Panel, a CD application, and Device mangager). I couldn't perform one step, however, because I needed the Sound Blaster Installation CD, so maybe the driver files were not removed completely. I did this before uninstalling the ACPI System, and as I mentioned before, it auto re-installed the card. I will be getting a one of those CD's soon, though, and I'm going to try the "cleansweep" again. |

Re: no sound from onboard or sound card... plz help!
Windows ships with a number of drivers of course (otherwise it wouldn't even be possible to install or boot the OS), which including things such as standard IDE controller drivers, basic sound and video card drivers, and whatever WHQL certified drivers where on hand when the retail OS build was finalised. Since the Radeon 8500-series pre-dates Windows XP, there will be the last WHQL certified driver included. Support software, such as the ATI Catalyst Control Panel or Control Center, is never included. You'll probably find however, that the Microsoft supplied Radeon 8500 driver is not fully accelerated. You should install ATI Catalyst.
Returning to the issue at hand however, I believe that your best option at this stage would be to reinstall Windows. |

Fixed the problem! Mwhuahahahaha
After giving up on previous methods, I finally decided to repair Windows XP using the CD. After doing this, the sound card drivers that Windows auto-installs worked and my Sound and Audio Devices in the Control Panel is not greyed out!
A note to whoever has the same problem: if you need to use the Windows XP CD's repair console, use it in the following manner. Pop the CD into your drive while your computer is still on. Reboot and press the button (mine was F12) that will take you to selective start-up options (where you choose which device you want to boot from). Select the CD Drive, and wait until you get to the screen where it asks you if you want to install a fresh copy of Windows or repair one. Choose install a fresh copy. The CD will then search for previous copies of Windows. When yours is found, press "r" (the instuctions on the screen also say typing "r" will repair Windows) and you are on your way to more sound. The rest of the repair is fairly straightforward, so I shouldn't have to explain that. I'm not absolutely sure, but I believe this "Repair Console" on the CD basically restores a fresh copy of the "Windows" folder (C:/Windows). You won't have to worry about any data loss since this is the only folder being replaced. One thing that you do have to worry about is that if you have Windows Service Pack 2 installed and your CD installs SP1 (which was my case), you will revert to SP1. This isn't a big deal since you can always download SP2 from the Microsoft website. I hope this helps to all who are experiencing the same problem I was! ![]() And once again, thanks for your help syphus! |

Re: no sound from onboard or sound card... plz help!
Post-note to anyone deciding to perform a Windows Repair operation.
Generally speaking, Windows Repair will fix most issues with Windows, but should be used with some discression. Repair will reinstall all original versions of the Windows system files and re-register them with the system registry. Windows Repair will not remove any files or modify any regions of the registry which do not relate specifically to the core OS. This is essentially a Windows re-installation, but with the dual effect of retaining installed programs and user files. There are multiple side effects however.
Windows Repair has been successful in this circumstance (so far), but I would not normally recommend this coarse of action in this circumstance, due to Windows Repair's relatively poor success fixing driver related problems. Following a Windows Repair, always reinstall the latest Service Pack and perform a chkdsk c: /f. |
