Recently, I've encountered the site going very slow, even in periods of little activity, and every once in a while an error message occurs saying something like error accessing database, could be caused by high traffic. I can't really remember exactly what it said and that was heavily paraphrased. Has anyone else been experiencing anything like this?

Not happened to me. This site actually loads alot faster than any other forum I go to. But I'll watch it and see if there are any failures.

Hi there Eric, I have checked everything out and all seems to be well with the site the host upgraded the db about 2 months ago and the site is a lot faster now. We have had a lot of search engine spiders on the site like google bot and the yahoo spider so it could be that they have slowed the site down during indexing.

Also you are in the states the server does periodic updates at about 2AM Uk time and thats about 7pm your time i would guess. keep me updated if it continues i will get on to the host Loz

I have, for about 10 minutes... last week...

And it was during the day, not 2am... :P

Well i have not seen anything in the server logs so could just be a glitch sorry for that.. Usual updates are at 2am ish uk time. So they must of needed to make an important update during the day.. Unlucky !!!

Well, that would explain the database problems when I was trying to access posts. Since I am in the eastern US, I would often post at around 2AM UK time, figuring that is only about 9PM here, only to see a big ERROR message appearing with database connection issues. Oh well... :

Itsallpc is hosted by fashost http://www.fasthosts.co.uk/ one of the largest hosting companies in the uk i will get on to them and see what is going on if you are having problems please post here and i can reffer the hosting company to this post and then they cannot argue as when i am on the site all looks fine.. sorry if this is a problem i will sort it asap Loz

Its not a huge problem normally; in fact the speed is generally good for the other times of the day. It only happens later in the day, around 9-10PM (2AM-3AM UK), which is when I usually post. Yesterday, the problem was so severe, I barely had a chance to post that message. I seemed everytime I clicked another link the error would occur.

Well i pay them good money to keep the site up for what they say is 99.9% uptime so if you are having problems or if anyone is having problems then it is a problem for me because i hate wasting money lol.. I did get one of the largest hosts thinking they would be good.. I will get on to them and get this sorted thanks for the info Loz

Its only happened on one 10 minute occasion for me since your upgraded... Thats 99.9% enough for me...

Well, it happend again about 5 sec ago.
Here's exactly what the error says:

[size=14px]Connection Problem[/size]

Sorry, SMF was unable to connect to the database. This may be caused by the server being busy. Please try again later.

That used to happen to me all the time during a period where I was forced to use dial-up

I'm connected on the fastest non-business broadband RoadRunner speed available---5Mbps. I cap out at about 600-640KBps.

Did the problem happen at the same time Schmidget? let me know the time if possible the site has been loading a lot quicker. I will ask the host about the problems and see what they say Loz

It was at about 11:06AM UK time. That's pretty early in the morning here; I think it was 6AM and I was trying to check for the responses to posts.

Thanks Schmidget sorry for the slowness. I will get on to the host and see what they have to say. usually the site is very fast. Your conncetion is fast so must be a problem with the DB and db queries!!

Update from the Host...

We apologise for the problems that have been repeated on Mysql DB X. This is due to malicious users abusing our service in an attempt to prevent us from providing service to genuine customers.

Our engineers are continuing to monitor this and ban any users who are misusing the service.

Following an attempt by one user to overload the mysql server, mysql DB X we were experiencing some slowness/timeouts.

We will be monitoring the situation closely.

2nd Server note...

Unfortunately we've had to re open this issue due to over use by one user. We are investigating this again. Please accept our apologies for the inconvenience.

Our engineers are solving this problem and we will be monitoring this closely!

So sorry there may be few problems because the host DB server is under attack this may continue for a while until the host has banned all users spamming the DB server.. Loz

For reasons of cost yes the database is on a shared server but itsallpc does have unlimited space and bandwidth! Loz
