My new PC
I got this given and fixed it. Its fantastic. What do you think?
AMD K2 150.01Mhz(?) Processor, 32Mb SD Ram 4gb HDD AGP Graphics card (Which must be good becauses its got a fan on it and it says "ATI" in a corner). 40x CDRom. I'm looking for a suitable free Linux distro that will actually run on that peice of crap, and reccomendations would be apreciated. Ive also got a couple of others working, both Pentium 3, one 450MHz one 850ishmhz with 10 and 20GB hard drives respectively. Which are great. I think these are antiques? Also got a 75MHz IBM processor but no mobo to run it which is a shame. I'd love to have that power in my tower, so to speak. What you think, great, aren't they?

There's something kind of cool about working on old PCs.
i used to have a 400MHz PIII laptop which was cool to mess about with - I stuck a couple of Linux distros on it and fiddled with it till it worked OK. Then my eldest knocked it off the table. :| I think Damn Small Linux is your best bet for getting something usable working. It has a nice wiki/FAQ with lots of information. |

Thanks i'll give DSL a go. Hopefully will find some RAM somewhere to get it to 128mb.

If you can get 128MB working, you should also be able to run Xubuntu, although many criticise it for having lost its way somewhat and being too dependent on GNOME libraries. I rather like it, actually.
another alternative would be Fluxbuntu, or some other distro that uses a very lightweight window manager like Fluxbox, and is optimised for older hardware. I understand that distros which use the older 2.4 Linux kernel have broader support for older hardware. Last edited by the100thmonkey : 28/12/07 at 00:10. |
