RAM compatibility?
Hello
my question is this: If I want to do a RAM upgrade on my desktop PC (it is a Dell something-or-other), can I add two extra sticks of RAM which are different kinds/speeds to the ones that are already there, or will I have to remove the older, slower RAM?The ones that are in there already are 2 x 512MB, and the type is PC2-3200U. The new ones are 2 x Corsair 1GB sticks, it's hard to identify exactly what kind from the number on the sticker but it says 'VS1GB533D2', all i know is that they run at 533mhz. I think I will just take the old ones out and replace them with the new ones, but would it be possible to put the two Corsair sticks into the two empty slots even though they are different from the current RAM? Thanks!! |

I do not think two different speed RAMs would work at the same time. They both need to be of the same speed. Though am no expert but this is a general feeling, and would loved to be proved wrong from the experienced campaigners. Incidentally there are some issues of RAM I needed to figure out, for instance how can we know if RAM has gone defective, i.e. 2 RAMs are in the slot and one of them becomes problematic.

RAM
you can have RAM of different speeds but it is pointless for example
if you had 2 running at 1066MHZ and 1 Running at 256MHZ the higher RAM would all run at 256mhz. To avoid bottle necks and problems. My advice take one stick of RAM out of your PC take it to the store you want to buy from and they will probabley ask you how much you want and give you the correct type. As on your RAM stick will be a sticker which will identify it. A PC will only accept a certain type of RAM a DDR2 system will not accept DDR3 as an upgrade I took my RAM in when upgrading. JUST DONT BUY DIFFERENT SPEEDS.Its a waste of money. |
