Sony Vaio with P4sd-vl mobo +PC3200 ram

Hi,

I'm hoping somebody can help me.

I want to add ram to the above board (512mb now). I bought Twinmos Ram Model M2D9J16A-mk (we don't have much choice where i live) 2x 512mb. I have tried installing the ram and the PC won't boot. If I go into the bios setup, the ram has registered 1536mb but it simply will not work.

I have tried all permutations of the RAM in the slots and no joy.

Have I bought the wrong RAM?? Hope not as I live in Qatar and I got the ram in Dubai!!

Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks

Rory

Hi rorywquin, welcome to itsallPC

There should be no compatibility issues between the RAM and your motherboard. You could try testing the memory for defects however. You can find help on that here.

Note that your motherboard has the i865 "Springdale" chipset, which supports Dual Channel. If I am to take it that you're adding another two 512 MB modules to a system that has 512 MB of RAM, the system will not be able to run in Dual Channel, which will represent a performance loss. More information on dual channel can be found here.

Re: Sony Vaio with P4sd-vl mobo +PC3200 ram

Thanks for responding....here's the wierd thing.

When I opened teh box the 2x128 sticks were in slots 1&3. The new 2x512 (when installed) hung the system. I tried all combinations 1&2, 3&4 or 1&3, 2&4. Then I tried the new RAM alone and it didn't work so I assumed the ram was no good.

Yesterday, removed all RAM, switched on and got the beeps, switched off and I installed 1x512 and it booted. Then I added 1x256 in slot 2 and it worked, then I added 1x256 in slot 3 and it worked - when I aded the last 1x512 in slot 4 - wouldn't boot properly ...some errors - I booted in safe mode , rebooted - came up with a windows error message & report and then it was fine. I have switched on and off a few times and it seems to be working.

M/soft website came up with a utility to test memory (I think) but I have not tried it yet.

I'm thinking .."leave well enough alone" .............
