A question about RAM.

According to my motherboard handbook, it says that my motherboard has 2 slots of DDR, the first is for DDR 400 and the second is for DDR 333, and the rest with slower speed. NOw actually I'm using a DDR 333 of RAM, I wonder if I buy 1 more RAM with DDR 400, will follow up the slower RAM speed since my chipset can support DDR 400? My motherboard is AS Rock 775MV800. Thanks.

Re: A question about RAM.

If you use a combination of different value ram, the pc will automatically use all of it at the LOWEST value.

Re: A question about RAM.

Sorry for confusing you all bacause I was rushing yesterday. I want to buy a new RAM with DDR 400. Now I'm using a DDR 333. My chipset can support all of the RAM with DDR. So if I add a RAM with DDR 400, its speed will follow the DDR 333 isn't it? That's my question. 1 more thing, I set the speed of my DDR 333 at 200 MHz in BIOS, it changed the RAM DDR 333 to DDR 400 now, I wonder is it a harmful method to my pc? Thanks.

Re: A question about RAM.

Your chipset should support DDR400/Single Channel on all 4 DIMM slots.

By forcing DDR333 (DRAM 166 MHz) to run at DDR400 (DRAM 200 MHz), you are overclocking it. This wont necessarily damage the RAM, many PC components are capable of running outside specification, but their continued reliability is not ensured.

I cannot really advise that you continue to run your RAM at this speed however. Although it is possible that your RAM will just pack it in, worse is bit-flip errors causing data corruption; you system could become unstable and you could even lose your entire Windows installation due to corrupted HDD writes. Overclocking is an experts game, done with careful research and intensive testing to ensure stability. Since you don't really know anything about the RAM you have, or how to test it, I recommend you just run it stock.

Re: A question about RAM.

Syphus, thanks for your advice. But I'm still need your advice about my previous question. I mean will DDR 333 slow down DDR 400? As if I have the two RAM. ???

Re: A question about RAM.

All memory modules must run at the same speed. For compatibility, this speed has to be equal to the speed of the slowest module (since the slowest module cannot speed up for the fastest module).

If you have DDR400, installing more DDR333 will force the DDR400 down to DDR333.
