Wireless network problem
Hi,!!
Please read this, I really need computer help!! I have a problem connecting my laptop to the wireless broadband network at my house. I have read loads of things on the internet, and on here about people that have similar problems, but they don't make sense! I wondered if anyone could explain simply what I do, because I'm not really that clever with computers! If anyone can help me I would be really grateful!! As I really need the internet on my laptop to do uni work!! My laptop is a Dell Latitude D800, Intel Pentium M Processor 1600 MHz, 1.60 GHz, 512 MB of Ram, Windows XP 2002. We have a normal computer that is connected to the broadband internet, and has a router D-Link 2XR. We have another computer upstairs that connects to the internet fine. I have used my laptop at school and university before, and have never had any problems connecting to the wireless connection then, its usually been pretty simple. I don't know what else I can do, when I press start and search for wireless networks, it comes up with a default one, which I presume is the one for our house, but when I type in the password that we have it won't connect. I don't know if theres anything simple I need to do, and just don't realise. I don't have any programs like Word or Excel on it, cos it all got rebooted at some point, I don't know whether that is to do with it. But the thing that I need to do to install them says I need to be connected to the internet first anyway! I am just really really confused, and the frequently asked question things, and online support really don't help me at all!! If anyone does have time to read all this long message, and actually understands what I mean, and knows how to fix it, please email back!! I would be really really happy if you did, as I really don't have a clue where to start, other than what I read online which doesn't work!!! Thanks very much, especially if you read this far :P Jenny xx |

If you use your laptop for school and Uni then the chances are that one of these is set to your default connection, and your laptop is set to connect to any network in range if the default is not present...
Right, go to Control Panel>Network Connections Right click on your Wireless connection and click properties. At the top you will see a tab for Wireless Connections click it and you will see a box with Preferred Networks you should have your school and Uni networks in there, click on Veiw Wireless Networks and a box will pop up. Make sure you have the right one because you don't wan't to connect to your neighbours network. Click on your Network and connect, make sure you type in the encryption key correctly, then go back to Controll Panel> Network Connections>Properties>Wireless Connections, and check if your Home Network is in the preferred Network box. If not you will have to add it manually.... |
