Arrow __ wireless network. mac + pc __

Hi hope someone could give me a hand.

Just got a powermac g4 for a little play around. My internet comes from a Livebox (oranges equivalent to a BT homehub) router. Its actually very good.

I've had no problems connecting the PC to it both wirelessly (with a netgear USB adapter which is not capable with mac) and wired. I've got the PC running full speed on a wired connection to the livebox

But I cant quite manage to get the MAC on wireless. Its in a different room and needs to be, I'm using a Belkin 802.11g wireless Ethernet bridge (model number EFP7330)

Its plugged into (via ethernet) the mac, it will connect to the livebox, you can connect to its web based admin area (you get to this by typing the livebox's address in safari) but internet isn't happening

Ok, thanks

Chris

sounds like you haven't given the Mac the DNS address or the Gateway address.

Try typing http://64.233.161.18 and see what happens.

I'm not familiar with the layout of the wireless controls on a Mac, but there should be an area where you enter the DNS and gateway addresses. Because you're going through a router, these can be the same for the moment - you should enter your router's LAN address into the fields.

Hi mate thanks..

After looking around the admin area from the mac it seems like it isnt actually connected to it anymore...

Im guessing it just saved the pages.. because the 'time connected' says 2 days.. so that must be from when it was connected directly through a cable.

I'm almost totally ignorant of Macs to be honest - I know what they look like, and that's about it, so please forgive my stupid questions!
  • does the G4 have a Wireless card?
  • Are you able to access the card's management software?
  • Can you post a screenshot of the wireless admin page?

I went to Orange's Help and Support page, and got this, LOL:

Another forums page (here) suggests that you have to set the Livebox to "pairing mode" to pair it up with wireless adapters that aren't supplied by Orange.

So, do you know definitively whether or not that wireless card does work with the Mac?

I think that the problem is twofold:
  1. The wireless device needs to be paired with the Livebox - I was searching the Orange help pages for instructions on how to do that when I got the lovely descriptive error!
  2. The Mac doesn't know how to connect to the internet - it needs a gateway address and DNS address. You might need to tell the Mac these addresses (both can be your router's LAN address).
