wifi security
Hi guys,
I'm going to link the PC's in my house, and I think I understand what I need to do in terms of a router and wfi adapters. Except for.. with first PC, I assume I will need an ethernet card to connect the router? However, i'm a bit confused on the security issues Firstly do I need a security package such as Norton to be installed on all PC's that will be linked to broadband? Also, do I need additional software because it's wifi and if so what do you recommend. regards wolfboy |

Hi, Welcome to ItsAllPC.
Any computer you want to be wired to a router will need an Ethernet Card / NIC, unless it already has one on the motherboard. You can tell if it has one or not by looking at the back of your computer and looking for the following highlighted port. ![]() If your computer has a port that looks like that, you don't need to buy a network card. A network can run without any anti-virus software but it is highly recomended you use some. Some people don't like Norton that much but thats a whole different discussion. Each computer you want to connect wirelessly will need a wireless network adaptor, as you probably know. If you have Windows XP/Vista you won't need any aditional software (unless your wireless network adaptor needs aditional drivers - which will probably be included with the network adapter on a disc) I hope this helps! Any further questions feel free to post back. Tom.

If you are worried about people getting on to your Wi-Fi, just open up something like WEP2 or something
easy enough ![]()

Well, this is the story, I took the plung and ordered the netgear router/modem DG834G. I am still recoverying from the shock! Basically everything just worked! I followed the wizard and it just worked. I also bought a 5 licence Kaspersky, which was only 24 GBP.
However the one of the PC's I was going to network has died, but that's a question for another forum. wolfboy |
