Wireless dial-up connection ?
Morning to all - here's a tall order. I have a BT line and am currently plugging my laptop into it. What I am trying to do is use the wireles card on the laptop to make a connection to this bearing in mind broadband is not available so am having to make do with a dial up service. Does anyone know if there is such a thing available on the market to do this ? Thanks all.. Mark

Re: Wireless dial-up connection ?
Hi and welcome,
Yes it is very possible. The idea has been around a long while. Best options: 1. If you have a desktop, connect that to the internet via its modem, enable internet sharing and put a wireless card into it. This requires you leaving the desktop on while using the laptop to browse. 2. Buy a Wi-fi base station with an integrated modem. Not too sure where you'd get one nowadays, my info is a little outdated, but it certainly is possible. Hope this helps ![]() ps. you will experience a reduced connection speed if you go wireless and it might be more noticable with the Dial-up. |

Re: Wireless dial-up connection ?
Hi, Bt do a thing called BT On-Air Wireless modem, you plug the modem into your normal phone socket, and plug the reciever into your USB port , and then you have wireless Dial-up, it wont be compatable with your network card. I hope this helps in some way.

Re: Wireless dial-up connection ?
Hi again and many thanks for your help to one and all. I finally got hold of a BT on-air wireless modem from Amazon as suggested, it was only £20 second hand with the postage and its just what I needed, I can now happily move my laptop around the house and havent had to up grade to Broadband or by a slave PC so I can still have a clear office desk and also take my laptop around with me to other peoples houses and use their phone line at no extra cost rarher than have a dedicated broadband line in the house. Top result for me 8). Kind regards.... Mark Cryer.

Re: Wireless dial-up connection ?
Well I would like to say thankyou for your constructive reply but that would be a false claim. Sure it sounds "nasty" - I'm sure it is compared to your set up, but the fundamental point in replying to questions is to actually find an answer to that question set and not that of another superfluous one set. Buying another PC and/or changing to broadband was not part of the equation as originally explained yet these are included in your opinions.

Re: Wireless dial-up connection ?
Very diplomatic
I would take the time to explain WHY people void sustained USB transfer devices, especially those that tunnel IP/packeted data. But it's too late now, and honestly, I doubt you'd listen anyway. Suffice it to say, if you had all the information, you'd judge the solution to be nasty also. In time however, I'm sure you'll discover what I mean by yourself. |
