Network Problems

Hi, I am very new to pc help forums, just a quick 1, i have a t1 broadband connection with Blueyonder and i have the network set up as follows.

Cable modem is conected to WAN port of router via ethernet
PC1 is connected from the router's No1 LAN port via ethernet into motherboards network card
PC2 is connected from the router's No2 LAN port via ethernet into motherboards network card

It all works fine, however not consistantly at all, the connection sometimes disappears, it is weak, usually restarting my modem and router usually does the trick, but sometimes doesnt. have had a message up once, telling me that i have an ip conflict on my system? So does this mean i need to change the network settings of one of the PC's, or both?

Any help would be much appriciated,

Thanks

Woz

Re: Network Problems

Are you using DHCP (known as automatic IP configuration in windows) for both client PCs?

Re: Network Problems

The problems you describe points to damaged or misswired cables, or a defective switch component in the router.

The IP conflict could occur if one PC keeps a DHCP lease after a router reboot, which would clear the DHCP leases, and the other PC fetches a new DHCP lease. DHCP leases as incremental, so in this scenario, if the first PC also fetched the first lease available, and that lease was later reissued to the second PC, they would have the same IP address.

Re: Network Problems

Check your cables. The best way of doing this, without the correct tool, is probably to try plugging them into a switch that you know functions correctly. Alternatively, you can try replacing a cable with one you know to work.

If it's not the cables, it may well be the router. Take it back to the store you bought it and ask for a warranty replacement.
