Wireless desktop card problem
I have a specific and particularly annoying problem with my wireless desktop card.... I'm a relative PC novice, and I'm part of a house of five, who all use the same Internet connection via a wireless router. The other wireless computers are laptops with Intel Centrino; I'm the only one using a wireless desktop card (a Belkin 802.11g 54Mbps wireless card, model number F5D7000). Basically, when it's working, it works just fine, I can connect to the router perfectly, and the Internet speed is good. Everything is fully compatible with my Windows XP (SP2) operating system. The problem is that every so often (sometimes after a few minutes, sometimes after several hours), it disconnects from the Internet, suddenly and quite at random - one moment I'm connected, with signal strength ''Excellent'', and the next moment it's disconnected. No one else in the house experineces this problem, just myself. I've tried reinstalling the software several times, I've tried looking for driver updates, I've tried reducing the connection speed to 11Mbps, I've tried using a fixed IP address, and a few other things. But still no luck! Any help or suggestions would be immensely appreciated; this is getting pretty annoying now (it disconnected again while I was writing this!!!) |

Re: Wireless desktop card problem
Hello aa2239,
Try and check out what channel you are sending on move it to channel 2/3/4 or 7/8/9. Also look in your windows wireless configuration and see if you have band g mode selected! Loz

Re: Wireless desktop card problem
Hey Loz, thanks for the advice, I'm implementing it now; will let you know if changing the channel helps. In the mean time, can you please tell me how to check if i have band G mode selected in windows? Could it be that XP SP2 doesn't have that feature, cos I can't find it in ''Network Connections''.... |

Re: Wireless desktop card problem
Hey Loz,
thanks for all the help, absolutely first class! The problem's sorted now - the culprit was Windows itself! Turns out that Windows' Wireless Zero Configuration (WZC) was periodically trying to connect to another nearby wireless network, specifically during periods of prolonged inactivity - this involved disconnecting from our own network first. I got into Control Panel -- Administrative Tools -- Services, and turned off WZC there ( but only once I've established a connection first, cos it needs to be on for me to do so). Thanks again! |

Re: Wireless desktop card problem
Figures that it was another wireless network nearby, I have found that when things work great but all the sudden, it stops working or it disconnects (wireless only), that there is just another closeby wireless network interfearing (eek don't know if that is correct spelling).
It was hard for me to fix this problem myself, seeing as is I have 5 other wireless networks that are all un-password protected with highspeed internet around me, all neigbours. So, in other words, i will be sitting there on the web (maby even now lol), and i will suddently connect to my neigbour's internet connection. Good thing i fixed this because i donwload alot and I was using the neigbours bandwitch. Anyways, Glad that you solved you're problem, Jbrown456 |
