Netgear help

1st post on this forum, Hi everyone. I've just got a new Netgear DG632 ADLS router/modem, and I've hooked it up via Ethernet. It works perfectly, and the automatic setup was easy. One problem though: when it's hooked up to my phone cable, I get no dial tone. It does go througfh the splitter, and it picks up the ADSL signal fine. The loss of dial tone is still there even with the router powered off. The dial tone comes back if I unhook the cable from the router, or if the router is unhooked from the splitter.

Do you reckon the router is shot in some way? It's brand new yesterday, so I'd be surprised. I have also emailed Netgear Technical Support, but if anyone here can offer advice it would be appreciated. Cheers in advance.

Re: Netgear help

Hello Mr_mark,

I should think that something is not right. I am using a D-Link 604T router and i havea dial tone. It does sound like there is a technical problem inside of your Router or Splitter. Let us know what netgear has to say! As you only got it yesterday take it back to the shop anyway and say there is a problem with it and get a new one if it happens on the second unit then there must be a config issue.
try changing the splitter/filter this could be broken and is the reason for the problem. If its broken then it cannot split the signal.
Try setting it up using a different phone socket. Maybe it is a problem with that socket. ( I doubt it But we have 2 check everything)

let us know what happens Loz.

Ps. I just PM'ed U

Re: Netgear help

It's not the splitter, I had my original one attached from my old USB modem, and then tried the one supplied with the netgear router, same result. I've got an old router with memory problems, but usable, so I hooked that back up and the dial tone is there straight away. Funny that the Netgear could be faulty though. Will let you know what Netgear tell me.

Re: Netgear help

I would take it back to the shop and either let them test it for you or replace it. If You have tried another peice of hardware and it works then it does sound like there is a problem with the new router. I suppose there could be a config problem. Or maybe you could update the firmware to the latest version?
