Question New build, and nothing is happening!!!

Hi all,

I've been building up a computer for my house as an alternative to my notebook...
here's what I've got...
"Palomar Springdale PE (MS6763 Ver 1.0) µATX motherboard" = Core - Palomar Springdale PE (MS6763 Ver 1.0) µATX motherboard - spec_palomarpe - Information and Instructions
I have2 different Pentium 4 CPUs, a 1.7ghz, and a 2.66ghz, and have tried both unsuccessfully
a 3000rpm fan,
both an ATA 40gig harddrive and a SATA 250 gig harddrive, both plugged in, have tried them independently as well.
a 500w PSU.
a single 1gig PC 3200 DDR 400 Mhz ram stick
(also a 256 graphics card, but i'm not using that yet.)

when i turn the computer on, it starts beeping; "a long tone, then - high, low, high, low, high, low" etc... and does not show anything on the monitor
the fan powers up, as does the harddrive, but thats it...

Do you have any idea what may be wrong with it?

thanks in advance, fb

Hi there, Welcome to ItsAllPC.

Your motherboard should have come with a user manual, and this manual should hopefully explain the different bios beeps and translate what the motherboard is trying to tell you.

Hope this helps,
Tom.

Unfortunately it didn't
I bought it discount, without such useful things as a manual!

The manufacturer is MSI, and on their site, it states that a high-low siren is due to insufficient cooling.
I have attached a 3000rpm fan to the CPU with thermal grease, and plugged in the 3 pronged plug.
Is there something i have missed, should 3000rpm be enough for a P4 2.66g cpu???

I would have thought so. If its a problem with cooling I would have thought that the computer should atleast try to boot up whilst its cold, then cut out a few seconds later from overheating....

hmmm...
if it was a ram problem, would it even boot up to the POST stage?

also would it get that far if it was an unsupported CPU??

With a RAM problem it would bleep straight away i believe.

I'm not sure about un-supported CPU, though I would presume it would also beep straight away without attempting to boot.

cheers midi,

bit stuck with all this now.
MSI Computer Corp. - Support
this is what i have been looking at, and it suggests overheating, possibly, could the cpu fan not be compatible with the motherboard? though theplug fits perfectly.

also, noticed where you're from, i'm from near halifax, prob not too far!

Yup just 15 minutes down the A629!

I'm not sure if i'm reading this right (Had a few lagers) but on the website you showed me the BIOS beeps you are getting are RAM related (Under 'Any other beeps'.

If you have more than one stick of ram try boot your computer with only one stick in, or try boot with some RAM that you know that works.

You could also try this thats on the website:

I'm just using the one stick of ram at the moment, but it doesn't make it too obvious if the ram i'm using i compatible...

The memory i'm using is... 1GB DDR 400MHz, PC3200, 2.5V, Non-Parity, Non-ECC, 184-pin

do you think this is too high spec for the motherboard?

also is it possible to have to high a wattage PSU?

Your motherboard supports a maximum of 4gb RAM, 1gb in each slot. So it shouldn't be a problem unless it is faulty.

And no you can't really get a 'too high wattage' PSU.

hmmm, I must be doing something stupid then.

I have tried with two different hard drives. sata and ata.
I have tried two different CPUs

I have tried 2 ram sticks, one 256 and one 1gig, both pc3200, 400mhz.

from looking at this site;
Multimedia Audio Controller Problems - Page 13
I can see that someone has got it working with pc2700, so maybe this would do it.

otherwise, I have no idea!

I'm clueless. lol.

If it is a memory problem you could try use pc2700, but if it doesn't work it's a waste of cash.

I really don't know what to suggest - sorry!

i've got another motherboard, so will try that. if that doesn't work, then its prob the ram i'm guessing.

cheers for all your help anyway!
