Fitted new Motherboard-now will not boot.

Hi there,
I have just purchased an AS Rock P4VM800 motherboard and fitted it into my computer. I have a problem now in as much as when it tries to boot up it gives a flash of blue screen and then switches off and reboots before loading windows. The original motherboard was totally dead and prior to that happening the machine ran ok. I have tried another memory stick to no avail and have scanned the hard drive in another computer for viruses and none were found. Does anyoneテつ! have any suggestions for me as to what could be the likely cause and remedy?テつ! The memory is 512Mb DDR333 166Mhz PC2700 and the operating system is XP.

Many thanks in anticipation.

Pete

Hi sisgen 10. At what stage of the boot process is the crash occuring? After installing a new mobo you should be looking at reformatting hard drive and re-installing windows. Can you get into BIOS to change boot priority so that you can install windows again from disc? (Dont forget you will need a valid serial number)

Re: Fitted new Motherboard-now will not boot.

Hi Dave,

Yes I can reinstall windows but I didnt really want to have to format the drive unless I have to. I may copy everything onto another just to keep it and then try formatting and reloading windows, but I was hoping to get away without doing this. Is there any reason why the new motherboard shouldn't work with the old drive as it was, obviously I would have to install new drivers etc if I could et into the programme. It boots up and because it actually crashed before the original m/b died then as it boots up now I get the option to boot into safe mode, last known good config, normal etc but which eber one I choose even safe mode it attempts to boot, give a very fast flash of blus screen and then reboots as if I had switched it off and back on again.

Re: Fitted new Motherboard-now will not boot.

Mornin Pete. I am sure one of the techies can give you a full detailed response as to why the reformat/ re-install is needed, all I can tell you is that I have just (2 days ago) changed mobo myself, and had exact same thing happen with my machine before re-install. With the mobo being the integral component which all other hardware communicates through, in real terms you have not replaced a component but have built a new computer using parts from your old machine.
If you have tested the HD in another computer I would suggest slaving your HD in this other machine to save any important software you have, then when you do come to reformat your drive, partition it, install Windows onto the first partition and save your valuable stuff onto the new partition, (by slaving other HD onto your machine). I know this sounds really long - winded, but it also brings to the fore the importance of backing up your system regularly. By doing it this way, if ever you need to re-install again, all your software will remain intact and unaltered by the re-install.

Hope I have been of some help.

Dave

Re: Fitted new Motherboard-now will not boot.

Hi there,

I have reistalled windows without reformatting the disk and thereby saving all my data etc and it now boots OK. Then I noticed that whenever I tried to use the USB ports the computer crashed in various ways. Fitting an uprated PSU (the original motherboard worked with a 250 watt PSU and this new motherboard obviously requires a 300watt one) fixed this problem and it all works fine now. Thanks for all your help.

Pete
