windows xp start up blue screen

I reformatted and reinstalled Windows XP. But a blue screen appears during start up I received this error:

A problem has been encountered and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

If this is the first time you have seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check for viruses on your computer. Remove any newly installed hard drives or hard drive controllers. Check your hard drive to make sure it is properly configured and terminated. Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption and then restart your computer.

This error appears when: i boot the computer, the processor speed, detection of drives, memory etc appear, then it says "Verifying DMI Pool Data" (all of this is usual). after this, windows xp logo is supposed to show, that it's being loaded. instead i get the error above. another thing i noticed is that now, "verifying DMI pool data" takes around 1 or 2 seconds longer than usual.

i have not installed any new hardware or software. i just reinstalled windows. My HDD is ok since i installed windows on it (worked fine) on another PC. When i put back the HDD on my PC, got the same error. IDE cables are ok. Could it be motherboard (God forbid)? or memory? Any suggestions? Anything i can do to pinpoint what's really the problem? A friend mentioned on using diagnostic tools.. what are those?

Sorry i'm not good with hardware. Thanks for your concern.

Re: windows xp start up blue screen

Hello and welcome to the forum,

The first thing I would do is check the RAM for defects. This can be done using Memtest86+.
Download the bootable floppy version and run at least one pass, report any errors that show up.
We can then help you further.

I think I might know the problem..

Keep the HDD in your computer and reinstall XP fresh install and tell me how it goes..
I had that problem when I installed windows on another computer then put it in mine i got this..

But anyway all bluescreens are different.

Just reinstall windows on your computer with the HDD

I'm trying to understand what you're saying here...you installed Windows on one PC and then put the HDD in another system? Windows must be installed on the host system unless the transplant is to a complete clone. During Windows installation, a number of core drivers are configured for a specific motherboard, CPU etc. If you move the HDD to another system, Windows is not able to boot properly at worst, and function abnormally at best.
