Problem with Shortcut?

My 'son' as they do has just told me SOMEHOW he can no longer hook up to our wireless network. He can't recall how it happened but he has ALSO LOST a few things...
At switch on displyed is the message:
"The Item 'PCARmDrv.exe that this shortcut refers to has been moved / changed"

Does anyone know what this refers to and what he has done?

Also several of his desktop icons when clicked display messages like this one...
Cannot find the file. 'D:\Apps.Games\Windows Media Player \ wmplayer.exe (or one of its components)

There is nothing in the recycle bin to suggest deletion.

CAN ANYONE HELP PLEASE?ÂÂ!

Re: Problem with Shortcut?

Hi there, and welcome to ItsAllPC.

I presume your running Windows XP, so try this...

Go to Start, All Programs, Accessories, system tools, and click on system restore. If the problem you have started recently, set the program so it restores your computer back to 2 week ago or so. You may loose a couple of programs, but you will not loose any files or folders you have saved.

Try this and post back.

Re: Problem with Shortcut?

Sounds like a common Windows 98 fault... Which can happen on its own even with out user interferance (Meaning your kid(s) arent neccesserily to blame)

If you haven't formatted you computer and re-installed Windows for a while, then it will deffinately be worth a go - and will fix your problem... Although it is highly recommended that you upgrade to XP...

Hope this helps..
Tom.

Re: Problem with Shortcut?

Jeez...I'm getting beat to the posts left and right! I've got to quit spending so much time on them! :'(
Oh well, since I've spent about 15mins on it, I might as well still post. Hopefully the information given is still relevant. :-[

When you say D drive is an extra hard drive, do you mean it is on your son's computer, or on another computer on your wireless network?

If its the latter:

What may have happend is that some of the programs that his computer is trying to access is actualy residing on another computer that was once available over the wireless network. Since a connection between your wireless network and your son's computer isn't working, the shortcuts are now pointing to a file on an HD that doesn't exist.

While on the subject of wireless networks, I believe the program "PCARmDrv.exe" is a program that somehow allows the use of wireless networks of Wireless LAN cards or routers. The keywords in the previous statement are "I think." Beyond that, I don't know much about it. Perhaps a google search is in order. If this is some sort of executable that that directly influences the capability of wireless networks, then you may have the source of the problem.

To answer your question about System Restore in Windows 98, the short answer is that there is no built in capability that I know of. Perhaps somebody could enlighten me otherwise.

Sorry I couldn't help more... :-\

Re: Problem with Shortcut?

Sorry Schmidget!

I really wouldn't use Win 98 on a Network Anyway... Infact, unless its Win98SE, im surprised it even ran on a network smoothly atall..

Re: Problem with Shortcut?

I'm pretty sure 98 wouldn't run too bad on a hard-wired network. It's the fact that they got a WIRELESS network running on it. I didn't even think that was possible. Learn something new everyday!

Re: Problem with Shortcut?

Thank you all for your time...
It's the first time I've been on this forum and I am very impressed with the responses.

The Win 98 is SE.
The extra drive is on the same computer.

???What we are going to do is look for the best priced Win XP and install it.

Thank you all.

JK.
