As you might know, Comet doesn't sell you the cd with vista on it when you get it. it is already stored on the hdd and you have to set it up, gay i know but that is what they did to me

Well that makes it a good bit trickier. Is there any chance you could copy it to a cd and see if you can run it from there? Another reason not to buy from comet!

Vista still uses NTFS, so you could pop in an XP CD and format it with that.

I'm guessing that they've given you a restore partition on your drive?

Once you've got your PC set up, you could look into backing up the partition with Norton Ghost, which you can then use to restore your defaults at a later date from either DVDs or a separate partition.

But you do have a restore partition?

I thought they were obliged to give you a copy of some kind of installation media - either an restore partition or a physical CD.
