Well, "useful" is a subjective term - the question one really needs to ask is "is it fit for my purposes?"

For example, if you run a single-core PC with integrated graphics and 1GB RAM, you'll probably find that Vista is slow and unresponsive. However, If you have a beast of a machine with 4GB of DDR2, a dedicated graphics board and a core2duo, you'll find that it's a much more pleasant experience.

You should also take time to find out about hardware and software suport - older items such as webcams, soundcards and graphics cards might not have functioning Vista drivers at all, particularly for the 64-bit versions.

A further issue to consider is playback of HD content - Vista's inclusion of HDCP may in the future have implications for the kind of media you can watch, and in what resolution - if any part of the chain (video card, motherboard, monitor) is not HDCP compliant, you may find that some HD content you try to view on your PC will be downsampled. As far as I know, this hasn't been turned on yet, but it's still possible for it to be so.

I am a bit tired of Vista, it's much slower than XP and performs many unnecessary operations, like reading images when you are trying to copy them. It slows down the process significantly.

On this machine I dual boot with XP Home and VISTA Ultimate.
I didnt like Vista at first, many unessary things going on but once I spent a while turning rediculous things off *cough* UAC *cough* and that stupided side bar that just burns up the CPU usage for no particually usfull reason... I found its quiet nice
