Recommend laptop to buy

Hi, I want to buy a laptop and don’t know how to go about it so was wondering if anyone can recommend one or where to look?

I am based in London and would use the laptop to work (Word, Excel, Power Point, Acrobat) but also want to be able to listen to music, watch DVDs and use Internet.

I did some research and it seems these are the features it should have (some of them I don’t know what they are), would these be ok?

100-160GB hardware
1GB RAM
Modem
USB ports
DVD recorder
Dual Core Processor
Screen 15.4 or 17
Wireless Internet
Video card 256 MB
Windows XP Professional
HD Audio, Surround sound

Can anyone let me know of a good brand, and not extremely expensive, with these or similar characteristics?

Sorry if my post sounds too simple. I don’t know much about computers and have never owned a laptop but it has now become a necessity, mainly for work reasons.

Thanks.

Your specs sound good. I would recommend you stay with the name brands like toshiba and dell. Actually you might want to consider a Macbook. The screen will be a little smaller than the 15'' you stated but you can install windows on it.

This is debatable.

I would personally avouid buying an Acer. I've had bad experiences with them, many, many bad experiences.

I know a couple of people that have Acers that are fine, but every Acer product i've ever had has had faults, and lots of them. The Acer repair centre used to be good though, untill some other business took over that part of Acer, now they're fussy and "the receipt you have isn't the right sort so we can't fix it, you'll have to get Comet to give you another one".

Meh.
