Laptop Password Dilemma

My daughter has lost the password for her IBM THinkpad. How do we get the thing working again. We've accepted we'll lose all saved data anyway and it wasn't important anyway but how do we get it functional again? It would be a pity and a waste to throw it away just for the sake of a password error.

Is windows password protected, or is it the BIOS that has the password? Are you running XP or Vista?

BIOS I guess because it happens well before Windows has had chance to boot up.

It may not be a password problem. An ok sign is being given after putting in what she thinks is the password but it's saying error 00161 and error 00163 which I think are battery probs but the thing is it's doing this even with no battery in it and on mains power i.e. running from the adaptor! Any ideas?
