Free space on drive

I've just bought a new laptop with Vista home premium . I am intending to back up my C: drive to an external drive with Norton Ghost. In My Computer it shows C: as having 42.9GB free but when I open it & view the files the total size of the folders inc. hidden is approx. 27GB . What happened to the other 15? Recycle bin is empty

The Windows file is 8.69GB that is part of the 27GB I quoted in the original question . I have uninstalled Norton & the trial version of Office 2007 . I thought Vista would be in the Windows file surely

Wait a second, did you say that you have "42.9 GB free" but that your total size of files is "27 GB"?

Doesn't that mean you have something like 27 GB used on an 80 GB drive?

No . I have a 100GB drive. When I right click> properties on the drive itself it says 55GB free & 45GB used however when I add up the sizes of the files on the drive it comes to 27GB approx- this includes 8.9 Gb for the Windows folder . I have added & removed programs since the original post but I'm still confused with the difference between the 45GB it says is used & the 27GB of files that are apparently there .
