Laptop CPU upgrade possible?

I wanted an old extra cheap laptop (found out that's an oxymoron) for my birthday, and my parents decided to follow through with my request. They ordered a fully working Dell Latitude CPi for $120. Here are the Specs:

Pentium II Mobile 366MHz
160MB of RAM
6GB HD
13.3" XGA TFT
IEEE 802.1 card
and the usual stuff...

Not that I'm complaining about the CPU currently, but is it possible to upgrade the CPU?

Re: Laptop CPU upgrade possible?

Just FYI: The proc type is MMC-1, so the fastest clockspeed of any compatable CPU is a 466MHz Celeron (The next fastest being a PII 400MHz, I think). The difference, however, is that it is based on the PIII Coppermine Core with 128k cache, instead of a PII core. I read that it would be about 30%+ faster. Is that true? Is it a worthy upgrade?

I was also thinking of giving it 256MB of RAM by replacing the 32MB module with another 128MB. And I am going to throw in a DVD-ROM drive, as long as it is powerful enough to play DVDs. I don't see why it wouldn't have enough power.

Also, was the price reasonable?

Price is good. ~€100
Hopefully you'll be able to upgrade it.

Re: Laptop CPU upgrade possible?

Anyone have anything else to add?

I mistyped the price; it was actually $160. For my birthday, I'm throwing a sort of LAN party, so I was looking for all the fun Multiplayer PC games that would work in one way or another on the laptop. So far, this is what I have:

NFS III: Hot Pursuit
Counterstrike/Sven Coop
AOE II
Tribes

Those are all the old games that I could find in my house or on my HD. What other games (multiplayer) do you recommend that my laptop would be capable of handling? Just FYI, There's probably going to be 6 people.

Re: Laptop CPU upgrade possible?

Well, I recieved my laptop...and...well...
It started out ok. Booted perfectly, ran surprisingly fast for a Pentium II 366. One thing I did notice however was that the Battery wouldn't charge. But that wasn't too surprising, I expected that. Then after playing a game of solitaire for a few minutes, the bottom backlight started to flicker from dim to bright quickly. Then it stopped. A few minutes later it happend again only worse. Meanwhile, my parents are ordering a new battery, and DVD drive, totaling nearly $120!!! If I tell them there's a problem with the laptop they are going to FREAK!!

What do I do? I have seven days to return it to the seller, but then what will I do with the battery and DVD drive when they come!?

I'm pretty sure if it's a connection problem from the inverter to the backlight, I could fix it, but if it is an actual problem with either of those two, then buying replacements could be costly.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

Re: Laptop CPU upgrade possible?

I'd also like to add that there may be a slight chance that it may go away. I remember when I got my Jornada 728 in the mail, the backlight would constantly flicker. After a few days of running, it went away. Don't know why it came or went. I'm just saying those last sentences more so I feel better... :'(

Re: Laptop CPU upgrade possible?

Sorry for the constant updating, but so far, I haven't had a flickering incident! I prayed it wouldn't happen, and well, it hasn't so far! Hooray! ;D
