I dont trust any burner for the rest of my life

I got an error that reads like this “cyclic redundancy error check”. This error is on a DVD which I made recently. Why such an error? I use an external burner which is USB 2 and my computer is a USB 1. Could that be it?

Well I just bought an external drive today because I do not trust any burner anymore.

Does anyone know why this can happen and did I make a good choice in using an external drive as a backup?

That confirms it! Burning is a risk. I wonder why the error, is it the burner , software, or the conection such as the usb . So do agree that a external hard drive is the way to go?
Thanks for your input ;D

Re: I dont trust any burner for the rest of my life

You obviously missed the early days of 2X CD Writers! One in three CDs would be demoted to coasters...

Today's CD/DVD Writers are nearly infallible due to buffer under-run protection and good suspension systems...more often than not, it's the media that's the problem; generally speaking the cheaper the disks, the lower quality they are. Burning at a slower speed is a good counter measure against low grade media, and avoid exposing them to excessive heat. Some optical drives operate at fairly high temperatures (Lite-On comes to mind), which although well within acceptable limits, will toast bad media.

Of course having said that, there are also low quality optical drives as well; Samsung, Aopen and MSI have struck me as being short-life devices in the past...

OK, so I will try and slow down my write speed. I use Roxio "drag to disk" so I hope there is a control method in there .

Thanks for your input ;D

That's a packet writing software isn't it?

Usually, packet writing doesn't work as well as Burning by track, or by disc.

Re: I dont trust any burner for the rest of my life

Yes thats correct! My Pacific Digital burner came with roxio easy 7 . Never would think the soft ware plays a big role in the burn, I would have guessed the quility of the burner would by the key. Moreover, Roxio is a name brand as much as Nero.

I can get my hands on roxio 8 , you recommend that I go for it ? Then I will unistall this one and put in the new one.

Oh I just bought a usb 2 port that works off the card slot of my lap top. It is a mail order so I am still waiting. ;D

Re: I dont trust any burner for the rest of my life

it's not so much the software as the burning method.

Instant burning methods, or packet writing if you like, are less reliable than batch burning methods like by track or disc. Roxio is fine, but best used in the project or wizard style modes, than the drop/drag style.
