General Computer Software & Software Development Post here if you have any problems or comments about software that is not directly related to the operating system. This excludes virus and spyware protection suites, for which we have a separate board and drivers which should do in their relevant hardware board.

Hibernation!

I have a P.C. that was made by a local firm that has since closed. I used to be able to set a time after which the computer would hibernate and I could re-boot it if called away for anything and get back to what I had left. The computer recently had a virus, worm or other problem and I had to re-format the hard disc and re-install Windows XP with the full-version disc that came with the computer. There is also a "Winfast" motherboard disc that contains software for sound and which also allows a hibernation/standby option to appear on the "Power Options Properties" screen, and I have loaded these.
Since doing all the above, I can only get the computer to hibernate or standby once. After I then boot-up, it does not hibernate/standby unless I change the power settings. It will then hibernate/standby only once again. I would be grateful for any suggestions. I know it is not an essential option but it annoys me that it won't work properly.

Re - hibernation

If anyone is interested, I have found that my new broadband connection is the problem. I still have the facility to "disconnect" on-screen, which is left over from my old "dial-up" facility. If I do disconnect, then both hibernation and standby work.
I don't know if I am allowed to reply to myself but I am a new member and can't find any other way.
