Why is my system buggy?

Hi.
Since I went wireless my PC has gone slow and horrible to use, its connected to the router via the ethernet port, but I don't see how this will make it take a load longer to load programs and just to simply not crash for over 10 mins.

This is a list of software that ive fully updated and used to scan my pc:
Norton Anti Virus
Adaware Personal
Ewido Malware Remover
Hijack This
AVG 7

- I have also tried to keep my computer up to date with Windows Update
I formatted the pc recently (Thus loosing SP2), but when I check the Microsoft website it tells me that SP2 is running on my machine. (Although when Windows XP starts up the loading bar is Yellow, which i beleive indacates that SP2 is not installed.

Im completely out of ideas as to what is causing my system to run stupidly slow.

I don't think its a cooling issue, but how do I check this anyway?

Are there any other freebie programs out there that could help me out?

I would prefer not to format my PC again but if thats what it takes then i'll do it.

Thanks for your help
TomÂÂ!

+ Whilst im here, how do you uninstall that damn Microsoft outlook email crap?

Re: Why is my system buggy?

Basics First:

It's easy enough for software to miss-detect the presence of Service Pack 2 if the patch level is current. You can tell what service pack level you're running by looking in the System Properties dialog window, on the General tab. At the top, under system, it will say

Microsoft Windows XP
<whatever> Edition
Version 2002 (Older numbers indicate a beta build. No support here.)

Under that, it will say nothing, Service Pack 1 or Service Pack 2.

I don't know about the colour of the bar on the boot splash, but I did notice that after Service Pack 2, it no longer indicated which Edition of Windows XP you're using. Of course, if you have the Security Center (In Control Panel) or Data Execution Prevention (In System properties, Advanced tab, Settings button in the Performance box.). If you haven't installed Service Pack 2 since a reinstallation, either by the redistributable package or through Windows Update, then...uhh...I can't see at all why it'd be there.

If you're talking about Outlook Express; it cannot be installed easily and safely. But really, who cares. It's not going to cause you any harm just by sitting there. Make sure your preferred email program is set as the default in the Internet Properties dialog (don't remember precisely where) and just ignore it.

If you're talking about Outlook (not express), it's part of the Microsoft Office suite. Like any Office product, you can selectively install or uninstall it through Add/Remove Programs.

Connecting a PC to a network shouldn't affect performance. It must be a coincidence; try to remember what other actions you've taken since setting up the router.
Take note that installing multiple Antivirus suits is stupid. I'm not going to explain why for the millionth time, surely you can search the forum and find out why. Uninstall AVG or NAV, preferably AVG.
it wouldn't surprise me to learn that you've been very aggressive with Hijack this however, and removed important registry entries. Hijack This is a semi-expert tool; if you don't understand it, what it does or how it works, don't use it.

Re: Why is my system buggy?

I'm Running Service Pack one.

NAV couldnt find any virus so I decided to try AVG, which found nothing too, so I'll uninstall that.

I didn't delete a thing with Hijack This, as everything I saw looked like it should be there.

The reason I wanted Outlook Express uninstalled was because my laptop has a design fault, in that, when you close the lid, it cleverly catches on the keyboard hotkeys. So most of the time when I pick up my laptop i've either got outlook express open nagging me to set it as default, or 20+ Firefox windows open trying to load Yahoo Mail....

And now I have adware! Wohoo!

I've done a system restore & now it isnt crashing much, but it still seems a little slow.

Thanks for your help Syphus.

Re: Why is my system buggy?

Are you sure you can't reconfigure your hot keys? Usually there's OEM software to do this.

Perhaps you should consider a reinstallation. Make sure SP2 is installed from the get go,

Something has obviously gone wrong somewhere, and it'd be next to impossible for you to figure it out. I always say; if you ever need to do a System Restore, you're better off with a reinstallation. System Restore is a plaster for a broken limb.

Re: Why is my system buggy?

Formatting it right now.

The hotkeys on my laptop can be reconfigured, so it will load up a different programs when each is pressed, but it cannot be set to do nothing... :-[

Re: Why is my system buggy?

haha.

Reminds me of the stupidity of my Logitech MX3100 keyboard...all the keys can be remapped except for the little button that will automatically close an application...and it's right next to the left shift. The first button most people would want to unbound.

Can't you get it to just launch say, c:\windows\system32\cmd.exe /c ?

Or get someone to compile an empty .exe assembly for you.
