New build won't POST

I've just put together a desktop for my girlfriend from some old parts I've gathered together.
It's an AMD Athlon XP 2000+ CPU, an MSI 745 Ultra motherboard, 256Mb generic RAM, a 20Gb Seagate hard drive, a generic DVD drive and a GeForce4 AGP graphics card.
When I switch it on it powers up for around 5 seconds, and then switches off again. Could anybody please help? Thanks

I've been over it with a fine tooth comb, and everything is where it should be and is wired in correctly. I've tried running it without each part, to eliminate the problem, and the only time it runs for longer than five seconds is with the CPU removed. Could this be the problem?

is your CPU supported by your motherboard, sounds like the problem if it stays on with the CPU removed ?

It should be. I've used the same CPU/Motherboard combination in the past with no problems

The ram should be fine. It's 256Mb generic PC2100 DDR, taken from a working build.
