HELP !!!!! This is going to sound stupid, but I have had to reinstal XP home in another pc. I can connect to the net in 'Safe Mode', but in normal mode I cant. What do I have to do to sort this

If you have an Internet Security version of any anti-virus program, I usually find they have firewalls and other programs such as Parental Controls that can impact browsing. I find a lot of these Internet Security programs kill Internet browsing from time to time.

I almost always dump these Internet Security programs and use separate AV only programs and Firewall programs, if I choose not to use Windows firewall.

If it was my machine, I would unload McAfee and install AVG Free and use the Windows firewall or Zone Alarm Free.
