I think something's wrong with my video card

Last Christmas I built a computer out of parts I ordered from Newegg.com. I put it together and its been working great until about two weeks ago.

At first it would start up fine, work for 20 minutes to an hour and then the fan would start running very loudly and my monitor would display the power saving mode message, then go black. If I would leave it on like this the dvd drives would start making noises every couple seconds as if they were trying to open but couldn't. If I tried to open them, they would only open about an inch then close again.

After one time this happened, I opened up the computer and determined that it was the fan on the video card making the louder noise. I have a GeForce 7900GS video card.

Recently it has stopped working all together. When i push the start button nothing appears on the screen at all and the dvd drives immediately start making those same noises.

Does anyone know what's wrong with the video card, or is it something else? And how can I fix it?

Have you got another video card to test with?

It sounds like your video card is borked, but I've never heard of that causing DVD drives to misbehave too.

Might it be your motherboard?

No I dont have another card to test with unfortunately. I think the dvd drives acting like that might just be a reaction to the whole computer locking up. One person I talked to thought that the fan on the video card might be broken and it was drawing too many amps for the computer to handle. I dont know if thats possible though.

i agree with monkey, gpu's cant mess up disk drives can they? (unless its very serious:P).if you've got another HDD or can borrow one then do so.you might need to reinstall your operating system,as it can easily control everything including the malfunction of your diskdrives :P

p.s whats your psu wattage? tbh if you ordered them about 2 weeks ago they should be good

Mmmmmmmmmmm

Well sounds like its your video card but that shouldnt affect your opticalll drives, seems like a configuration error or maybe even a virus

Is you PSU working propperally? (Power Supply Unit)?
It might not be supplying all the pieces of hardware with enough power, so when you GPU is underload not enough power going any where else...

Just a thought.
