Post Data recovery

I had an e-machine with XP as OS that died and I was wondering how I could recover the data from the hard drive.

My new PC, an EI System, has Vista installed.

Would a USB caddy work? Is the difference in OS a problem? Should I install XP on the new machine for transfer perhaps?

I have never used a caddy before so I'm not aware of potential problems etc.

Appreciate any help!

Can anyone help?

Didn't realise that was a sarcastic smiley. Is that why nobody has responded?

Hi DanielC,

There are 2 options avialable,
1) You could set the jumpers on the back of your corrupted hard drive (If IDE) to slave and plug it into your new PC (the jumper settings can be found on the hard drive itself usually). Make sure you boot from your working drive an access the corrupted drive from you VIsta drive. Most new PC have bios's that can automatically detect new drive on bootup. If you boot from the working drive on your new PC you should be able to access the corrupted one from My Computer. Then its justa case of copying everything across. (Harder Option)
2) USB caddy would probably be easier+ quicker but if your windows OS is not booting then you wont be able to access the data on the corrupted drive. (this is why the 1st option is preferable). You need a working OS on the hard drive before you can access the files and transfer the data. The only way of using the USB caddy without the OS working is to use a LiveCD with an OS like Linux on it like Knoppix.(latest version) KNOPPIX - Mirrors (choose a mirror). this lets you boot from CD an all you need to do is plug in you caddy to copy files over.

All The Best CYBER

Have you tried downloading ubuntu on another computer then burn it to cd and boot as live cd from the drive. That is what i did and i was able to get all my files off the pc before reinstalling the os. PM me if you need any help doing this.

Its a bit early at the moment, but my team are currently writing some data recovery software which when they are finished, will be put on the website, ( 1CT Data Recovery) and be FREE for all to use.

There are some problems in that the free software wont be able to deal with firmware issues, and obviously wont deal with head crashes.

I hope this post was useful to at least some of you?

Regards,

Simon
PS Its my first post!
