Question Major problem that has me stumped!

Hello,
I've joined this forum to help shed some light on my current problem. Hopefully some of you guys will be help me out...

Now I consider myself to be reasonable clued up as to the construction of your basic PC, but I am having real problems trying to fix a pc for a friend.

The problem started a couple of months back where all of a sudden it wouldn't boot. It would power up and then turn off after about 10 seconds, and nothing would display on the screen. I took it apart, checked all connections etc and all seemed to be fine.

First of all I presumed the motherboard was knackered, so I bought a new cheapish one. Expecting everything to fire up, i tried powering it on, but now nothing happens.

I've swapped some of the bits with my PC in an effort to track down the problem, but to no avail. This included RAM, power supply, graphics card.

All that's left is the CPU, but as it's an Athlon 64 3400+ (Socket 754) and i've only got an Athlon 3200+ (Socket A) I have been unable to try another.

To me, it would seem that the only option left is to get a new CPU, but I wanted to check on here before doing that in case there is anything obvious that i've missed. I thought it was extremely rare for CPU's to give up?

There's no sign of overheating or anything on the current CPU.

The initial motherboard is an ASUS K8V if that helps.

I would be so grateful if anyone can help me out or has any ideas.

Thankyou

Yeah it turned out i'd bent a pin on the CPU
So I bought a sempron from dabs, put that in the old motherboard and then used the new power supply and it's all up and running again.

The inital problem was the power supply.

Cheers for the response.
