Acer Aspire SA60-3870

DVD/CD - RW has packed up for no apparent reason , error message reads
driver corrupt or missing (code39).
Uninstall / Reinstall won't correct it - system check just leads to error message.
Tried installing a new internal DVD-RW which I know works but leads to the same error message.
My question is can anyone tell me if it's fixable OR if I buy an External DVD - RW what are the chances of it working.

Have you tried calling acer tech support? Sometimes they have solutions for this sort of stuff. And, maybe reinstalling windows could help? That would be my guess after trying all that you've done.

You have an acer. Thats the problem.

Yes, Acer tech support should help but if they want you to return it to them for replacement expect a long wait and a charge if its software related.

If you were to try reinstalling windows, my question is, did your acer come with a reinstall disk? (windows disk)..

Press F10 (I think) through start up and you can use the recovery thing to completely re-install Windows XP. You might have to enter a code which should be Six 0's if its the same as mine by default.

Thats how I've always re-installed Windows and its worked fine each time.
