HI saints, welcome to itsallPC

If you're going to ask about possible upgrades, how on earth do you imagine we can help without any indication of the type of system you currently have?! Please add PC details to your profile.

The reason we need to know about your PC, is the type of hardware you are using decides your possible upgrade options.

Pentium 4s come in 6 distinct generations:
  • Socket 423 Willamette: Speeds of 1.3 GHz to 2.0 GHz, 256k L2 cache, 400 MHz FSB
  • Socket 478 Willamette: Speeds of 1.4 GHz to 2.0 GHz, 256k L2 cache, 400 MHz FSB
  • Socket 478 Northwood: Speeds of 1.8A Ghz to 3.06 GHz, 512k L2 cache, 400~533 MHz FSB
  • Socket 478 Northwood C: Speeds of 2.4C to 3.4 GHz, 512k L2 cache, 800 MHz FSB
  • Socket 478 Prescott: Speeds of 2.4A GHz to 3.4E GHz, 1 MB L2 cache, 400~800 MHz FSB. Motherboards must support PRB for speeds over 2.8 GHz
  • Socket 775: Models 505 to 672 (2.67 GHz to 3.8 GHz), 1~2 MB L2 Cache, 533~800 MHz FSB

With each new generation, motherboard support is required. Even if your system is equipped with a Pentium 4, there's no guarantee that you can buy a current generation Pentium 4.

Pentium D, which is basically 2 Pentium 4s in a dual-core package, also requires specific chipset support.

mobo/cpu

Sorry Syphus but maybe I'm wrong.... didn't Saints say he was wanting to upgrade both his mobo and cpu? yeah i'll agree it does depend on his system, ie has he got AGP as opposed to PCI etc but to say what you have is wrong.

From your reply I assume you believe he has an Intel cpu, there was no mention of which manufacturer of cpu he has, for all you know he could have an AMD

Either way I would expected a man of your calibre to submit a more positive response to a legitimate question. Perhaps an Asus P5B with an Intel core 2 duo.

upgrade

Sorry saints for that rant towards Syphus (No offence Sy but this is a democratic forum)

OK personally I'd forget Pent 4 and Pend D, reason being they're beings phased out along with the rest of the Pentium family at the end of this year. My advice ( and this is purely advice ) is to go for an Asus mobo and a core 2 duo processor

Hiya sorry for the lack of info... I'm going for a intel core 2 duo but having read a article in a magazine it states that the 1.83ghz is better than the 2.13ghz ? but was hoping for some info on a mobo have looked at the asus range but which one ? I'm also going to buy a Graphics card again which one . I can get the cpu for £120 therefore have a budget of around £100 for a mobo and graphics card if possible .

mobo/gpu

Hi Saints,

Do you need a seperate graphics card?

Perhaps a mobo with on-board graphics would be the answer...
Computer hardware and software at amazing prices, available online from Scan Computers UK
You could buy a graphics card at a later date.

Thanks for all your help buddy . I see that the mobo take DDR2 memory I was hoping to use my existing DDR but I suppose core 2 duo will require DDR2 to run at its best ?

Yeah, obviously I misread the user's post, thinking that he was just wanting to upgrade CPU.

However, democratic? You're mistaken. This is supposed to be a forum where people can get advice; good advice. To so say it is democratic is like saying that the 1000 odd users on this forum who know only the basics could "out vote" my advice. The only person who would believe such a think would believe that knowledge is a matter of consensus, not expertise.

You for example are someone who posts semi-frequently, but rarely anything of any quality. It would be a serious, serious mistake for you to criticize me like that, who has 1800 posts and has helped countless people, especially if you think to back it up with some notion of democracy. heh.

Consider these words: thin ice.

I really think that sometimes you mods on here can be a bit stuffy.

If you cant tolerate people that know less than you then shut the site down. FFS.

I'm not just a mod, I'm the guy who's posted over 20% of the the content on this forum. When I take the time to post a reply, it makes me a little irate to have my few and infrequent errors attacked in that manner. I ask for a little bit more respect than that. It isn't much to ask.

Smirnoff has apologized in PM, so that's that.

I, like many, are perfectly tolerant of people who know less on any given subject. However, it is difficult to tolerate those who know less rather loudly, and present themselves as knowledgeable (I'm not so much talking about Smirnoff anymore, but anyone who feels us mods have done them wrong). All I can say is; Welcome to the Internet. Sure, maybe at home you're the guy your friends and family say is a "real wiz with computers". You're the one they go to when they want to change desktop resolutions, add and remove programs, plug in a new graphics card. But here, I'm afraid, on the world wide web, you find yourself ignorant.

Now that's okay. We all need to start somewhere. If you really honestly have a genuine interest, people like us are well prepared (in fact, believe it a duty) to help you through the fog, but your chances of actually learning anything are greatly depreciated by thinking you already have the answers to all the questions. Your chances are virtually depleted if you attack your hosts.
