RAM Upgrade

Hi

I have an old HP Pavilion 4435 PC & want to upgrade my RAM from the current 64MB

The system can be expanded to 256 MB (using 2 slots) - however - I have tried a new 128MB card & my PC won't start ( the orange light doesn't come on nor beeps)

The guy at PC world reckons its because my PC can't read it because it's single layer?

I thought that my PC would be able to read 1/2 the memory eg 64MB at worst case scenario ..

If this is the problem can I still buy older double sided Memory cards as I really need to upgrade as I 'm running XP Home - it's OK just a bit slow!

Help / advice greatly appreciated - PC virgin..

Re: RAM Upgrade

The greatest hurdle to a system of that age running Windows XP is likely to be the processor, not the memory. I can;'t imagine your system is anything faster than a Pentium 2 class, for which Windows 98 was the preferred OS at the time.

Older systems that require double sided memory will simply not POST (Power On Self Test) at all with single sided memory. I have no idea at all why you'd think that a system that needs double sided memory should be able to read half of a single sided module, but let me assure you, that is not at all the case.

Re: RAM Upgrade

Thanks Syphus

The product spec for my machine - says I should be able to use single or double sided DIMM - however, the ones I've used so far are not recognised & stop my PC from starting - yet the old one is fine - would the speed 100mhz / 133mhz make any difference?

Re: RAM Upgrade

Midimoto

Thanks - however, current Memory runs at 66mhz & so far I've used PC133 & PC100 which don't seem to be compatible - is it possible that different manufacturers products although same spec can have different results.

My DIMM needs to be unbufferred & 4 clock whatever that is...

Re: RAM Upgrade

The speed of the RAM will not help you.

I still doubt that upgrading it will achieve anything at all.
