cam microphone recording

Hi, i'm trying to get my pc to voice record, either through the pc mike or the cam mike, but when I test the hardware through the Wizard, the playback is just distorted noise and loud. Anyone have any ideas? the cam is just a basic Logitech, the Pc Compaq Presario using XP. Thanks

Re: cam microphone recording

Hi hudson, welcome to itsallpc

There are a few simple things you can try before we look at more serious issues

Make sure the correct recording device is selected
  • Click Start, Control Panel (Setting, Control Panel for the classic start menu)
  • Open Sounds and Audio Devices and click on the Audio tab. If you cannot see Sounds and Audio Devices, you’re probably in Category View. Change to Classic View on the left.
  • Make sure that your default recording device matches the default playback device, as the primary hardware

Make sure the correct recording channel is selected
  • Click Start, Run and enter sndvol32
  • Select Options, Properties from the menu bar
  • Check Recording from the Adjust volume for box and click Ok
  • Make sure the Select box bellow Microphone is checked

If you’re using a head set microphone or a sensitive microphone and have microphone boost support, try disabling it.
  • Open the volume dialog and select recording, as described above
  • Select Options, Advanced Controls from the menu bar
  • If an Advanced button appears bellow microphone, click on it
  • Uncheck any boosting features.

Re: cam microphone recording

Thanks for the info. I did the checks you suggested. I am still getting a loud screeching when I do the 'test hardware'. The Cam mic' seems to work fine if i use send video through the Logitech software but if i want to use it with MSN messenger, which i do more often than not, it wont work.
The default devices for recording and playback are set as 'ESS Audiodrive' should they not be set as 'Camera' at all? Sorry but im kinda new to this!

Re: cam microphone recording

You can set your recording device to the USB camera, and try that if you like. It's still bad news that such a problem is occuring at all.

What model is the ESS Audiodrive? You can click on the Hardware tab of Sounds and Audio Device Properties and check the model there.

Re: cam microphone recording

I was worried about that.

It might be time to face the fact that your decade old ISA sound card is broken.
