overwritten profile

My home pc wouldn't boot in any mode so my friend said to put the windows disk in and go into the recovery console mode, in my haste I bypassed that and reinstalled the system files (I used the existing drives and did not format them) however my dilemna now is that all my folders and files (My Docs and My Pictures etc) from my old profile have been overwritten with a default Porfile with the standard folders.
CAN I RECOVER MY OLD PHOTOS AND MP3 FILES???????? HELLLLLLPPPPPPPPPP!!!!!!!!!!

Re: overwritten profile

When you reinstall Windows without formatting, new Security Identifiers are generated, which invalidate the old Identifiers, and give the impression that your Windows XP accounts have been lost, but they haven’t.

If you browse to c:\Document and Settings, you’ll see numerous accounts which seem to be duplicates, one with a suffix. If your old account name was duddee for example, your new account name will be duddee.computername, where computername is the name of your computer.

Your old files will be located in the account without the suffix, probably in the My Documents folder. In fact, all the information is located there, including things like your favourites, email, program configurations etc. There's no quick and easy and safe way to restore all that information, but you can recover the data manually on a program by program basis.
