PC doesn't shut down!

When I go to shut down my PC it hangs for a while (10-15 secs.) then looks like it has shut down but starts up again immediately. It automatically starts with scandisk, then starts up as if I had just started the PC.

Problem started when I added an ethernet card, broadband software, ???downloaded AVG Anti-Virus and Zonealarm firewall. I also have Symantec running.

I use an iMedia Packard Bell Desktop with Windows ME.

What can I do/check? ???

Re: PC doesn't shut down!

This is a common problem with Windows ME, caused by an application or driver failing to stop during shutdown, and crashing the system instead. There is probably no solution for you, apart from step backwards, uninstalling any software and removing any hardware untill it works ok again, and tying again. More often than not, you will end up needing to reinstall Windows.

Windows Update used to have a number of fixes for improper shutdown. I'm not sure if they support Windows ME anymore.

I need to STRONGLY caution you againsed running multiple antivirus software suits such as AVG and Norton together. This is categorically a bad idea. Don't think that this makes you more secure, because it infact makes you much less secure, since one program can end up attacking and removing the other's pattern files, rendering it useless.

Windows ME is widely accepted as the worst Operating System ever created. It might be worth considering an upgrade.
