How do I connect to the internet?

Sorry if this seems like an idiots question but I don't know much about computers/internet apart from connecting to the internet in an internet cafe !

My other half has managed to get a Dell P2 workstation from work and we're trying to figure out what we need to do to get it connected to the internet which is basically all we want to use it for. It was connected to the internet at her work so all the software should be there.

We've got a BT landline, do we need broadband to connect to the internet or can we just connect to it using our BT landline?
Also, what socket do we connect it to in the workstation?

Perhaps there's an online idiots guide to connecting to the internet you could point me towards?

Any help gratefully appreciated.

Thanks,
John

I'm not familiar with "BT landline" is it like a 56k phone connection or more along the lines of a DSL/Cable line?

Re: How do I connect to the internet?

Ah ok, so more like 56K phone line. Well, are you running Windows 2000/XP, or is it something else?

If XP this site shows you a very basic step through on connecting using your phone line --> http://www.powernethk.com/nsite/setup_dialup_56_xp.html

Of course you'll need to enter in your own ISP info and dialing #, acccount ID and such. Once configured it should be able to dial-in and connect.
