External Hard Drive
I am trying to purchase one of these but confused about what I need and where is the best place to get one from.
I want somewhere to back up all my PC pictures, music etc as I lost everything and never want it to happen again....(PC was reformatted and everything lost - friend did it!) Anyway I have been looking and seen HDD, SATA, IDE and I am confused. I just want somewhere to save everthing and ideally just plug and play |

I have found a 500GB on Argos for £65 reduced from £100 (I get 10% off in Argos too as my cousin works there)
Does it look ok or is it a rubbish going to brake make? Buy Maxtor Basics 500Gb External USB 3.5in Hard Drive. at Argos.co.uk - Your Online Shop for . Its much bigger than I will ever need but the 160 of the same make is only £10 cheaper so for £10 more why not have lots more GB's |

I wouldn't, the one's that lay down normally do make alot more heat than the one's that stand up

Hummm do I have to have it connected all the time? I only want to back up all my pics and music to it every few months - I dont plan to have it plugged in all the time just as and when I want to back up stuff - therefore it shouldnt get too hot should it as I will only have it on as long as it takes to move stuff over.

Yeah syphus, i have had like five of them that laydown and they have all seemed to stop working and when i have felt them they are red hot, or just gone pop and not worked anymore.
Maybe mine wasn't meant to be laying down put it did have the rubber mounts at the bottom ![]()

high street retailers charge crazy amounts for drives, these guys sell the most common and reliable drives around hard drives, i've ordered from them quite a few times.

DONT! I work in data recovery, its not worth it. They often fail. Sorry! |

My advice would be to go for an ICY Box, from Nanopoint, its where we get all ours from. We send out our recovered data in these with Seagate hard drives inside them.
As we are in data recovery, we see literally hundreds of hard drives. From this information, we get to see which are the best hard drives, (the make we see less of in our data recovery lab). For the last 7 or 8 years, we see less Seagate than any other hard drive, which to me means that Seagate drives fail less than others. I hope this helps? Simon |

I have started selling these due to recommendations from my customers, if I was honest I have not checked one yet, I will have to benchmark one. but I have nothing but good feedback from them.
Disklabs knows what he is talking about, regarding data recovery so if he advises on a hard drive solution I would trust it. |

The reason we use them is because they are not too expensive, and they have great ventilation, which obviously keeps the drives cooler.
We sometimes get plastic ones in to us for data recovery! Even worst, are the ones that dont come with any ventilation at all. If you were a Mac fan, they all seem to like LaCie units, however, some of their range have serious overheating problems. We can still recover data from the Lacie units though. Regards, Simon |

Ive not heard of them, no. I know at our data recovery lab that we havent seen them yet. Simple but good idea though?
