Unhappy CD-ROM / DVD drive help required

Hi guys,

Urgent help needed.

I have an emachines 5210 which is fitted with a Samsung SD-816B DVD-ROM and a Samsung 48x24x48 CD-R/RW SW 248F as supplied with the PC.

For some unknown reason, my PC has now decided not to recognise that i have either drive installed, hence I cannot use either!!! They do not appear in My Computer as separate drives and neither is acknowledged when I insert discs (even though I can hear them whirring and trying to read the discs.

I have a restore CD with the drivers on it but cannot read it!!

Is this a driver problem?

If so how can I get my CD-ROM and DVD drives back???

I have tried shutting down, disconnecting poer and data cables to the drives, switching back on. Then swithcing off again and reconnecting them and swithing power back on in the hopse that they will be recognised again.

Any help would be appreciated as I really need the use of these drives.

Thank you.

Lifeboatman.

Cool

Hi,I had the same problem.First go to control panel>system>hardware>device manager.Once there right click the first item on the list which shouldbe something like my computer or your computer name and click 'scan for hardware changes'.Wait for that and see if it picks them up then.If not power of your computer and switch it off at the wall. Then pull out the power plug from the back (safety first).Open your pc case and check that power is plugged in to them and the IDE cables are plugged in.They are grey cables about 2 inch's wide.on the back of the disc drives are whats known as jumpers. There should be a set of small 8 pins on each disc drive next to the ide cable slot.ON there should be a black cover that covers 2 pins.Find the drive which is the best such as the fastest dvd drive or a rw drive and set it to master by pulling out the jumper and putting it to the very right.Get the ide cable and plug the first plug into the disc drive i was just talking about.A plug should be in the mobo from the ide cable, then a long grey cable.Another plug should be there,The second to the last.plug that in.Then on the other drive pull out the jumper and put it to the second right.Put the last ide plug (furthest away from mobo)into it (the slow or worse drive).Make sure its all plugged in correctly and switch it on at the wall.Put the power cable back into the computer and make sure both drives respond by opening them (when pcs on).Start up the computer and do the system device manager thing again. That should work.

Dont open the pc if you're still under warranty as it is likely that this will void such warranty.

A friend of mine had a sticker on her machine which was purposely placed over the edge of the side panel and the rear of the case, saying warranty void if removed. In otherwords, if you open the case you void the warranty.

It depends on manufacturer i guess.

Most of those stickers are tamper evident. If you try to remove them, certain parts of the sticker will remain. If you remove all of the bits of sticker that are left on the case, then it's obvious that the computer was tampered with more so than before.

Exactly.

I dont usually lose my temper this easily but nath, will u please use some bloody common sense! Moving the sticker would require you to remove it and place it elsewhere...

Is this the same situation as your friend copy your CD? Both of you are selling pirated movies.
