Please help. CD/DVD rom not compatible with xp all of a sudden.

I have a phillips cd/dvd burner and i've had about 3-4 years. Great burner. It used to work with xp now it says it's not compatible. What happened ? I went on Phillips website and they do not have a driver for this particular burner for compatibility with windows xp.

Any suggestions would be most helpful.

No new software and i've checked for viruses and spyware. If I install a newer roxio it works enough to burn cd's. But I hate roxio :P . Hehe! Is there a better program that will maybe allow me to still burn cd's ?

Can you explain what you mean by "now it says it's not compatible."?

Re: Please help. CD/DVD rom not compatible with xp all of a sudden.

Sure I had Roxio installed and it would use roxio when I tried to burn a cd. I didn't like roxio, so I uninstalled it. I tried to use windows xp tou burn cd's and it wouldn't burn or read anything. Kept telling me the cd was full or write protected. So I installed my other burner, read the same cd just fine. That's when I decided to go to phillips website to find out if there were updates or something. It says no new drivers available windows xp.

Thanks

Re: Please help. CD/DVD rom not compatible with xp all of a sudden.

By saying your hardware is "not compatible", you're jumping to conclusions, which can make it very difficult to help you. It sounds instead like you are simply experiencing software problems.

First, I'd recommend that you ensure Recording is enabled for the Optical Drive. Note the Windows' built in CD writing software doesn't support DVD media, so even if it is enabled and you attempt to burn a DVD, you will get errors trying.
  • Click Start, Run and type services.msc
  • Find IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service and double click on it.
  • On the General tab, ensure that the Startup type is set to Manual.
  • Click Ok and close Services
  • Go into My Computer
  • Right click on the Optical Drive that is giving you problems and click Properties
  • On the Recording tab, ensure Enable CD recording on this drive is checked
  • Click Ok
  • Click Start, Run and type %userprofile%\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\CD Burning
  • Delete anything in that directory
  • Make sure you have at least 1GB of free disk space

If there is no Recording tab, then Windows is not detecting that the drive is writable, which would indicate something more serious.
