External Hard Drive

Hello,

I want an external drive to backup data on...can anyone recommend a good one? I'd prefer not to pay alot, but if I have to, I can. My hard drive is 30GB, but most of that wouldn't need to be backed up.

Thanks!

~Adam

Re: External Hard Drive

Hey Adam!

Welcome.
I'm recently new, and also looking for a hard drive. Being broke, i'm on a budget, but need the best value for money, i.e the largest drive i can get for my small budget.
I even played around with the idea of getting a hard disk case off ebay and then putting in a intenal hardrive, this seemed to be the simplest cheapest solutions

My other problem is i havent got any space in my unit, its allready got two drives. I am not at all confident in dechipering the master/ slace pin configurations, so don't want to touch the internal drives.

I guess here in the u.k, I have seen some decent drives from Freecom and Lacie both do average sizes in today's market, while maxtor have some large 500gb+ models available.
Not forgetting this is pre-packed shop sold, so have extra cost.
Would anyone know if there is any terminolgy that differentiates how external drives are powered? like does:-

usb 2.0 suggest powered by? or supports data transfer?

how big are the biggest drives powered by usb?

Re: External Hard Drive

Well, I have a laptop, so another internal hard drive is not an option. I don't need a real big one either, as my computer has well under 10 GB of data that would need to be backed up.

Re: External Hard Drive

yeah sorry adam,
i was gonna finish by suggesting you get a freecom fhd-x it is powered by usb, (cool if you don't want to keep having to untangle wire to get infomation sorted)
and it's pocket sized, they range in sizes from about 40gb. Found in shops.

but if you want cheap, then

1) make your own external drive.ÂÂ! ÂÂ!can also be powered
variably.

2) get a old, smaller storage sized one, ( maybe the mains powered models here can be an advantage for cheap bargins. try Classified ad's, second hand goods, ebay, work noticeboards e.t.c

P.s WAIT FOR SOME ADVICE I am a new member, one of the tech wizzes will help you out soon enough, just shwing you some idea's....
