Please help - hard drive wiped by virus??

Hi guys

Last night, going about my business on the net as usual and suddenly my mouse started playing up, clicking loads of times when I only pressed it once so, I shut everything down and started the computer up again.

Now it is asking for my product code for my operating system, I have all my uni work on there and don't have a clue what has happened.

If I enter my product code will my work still be there or is it lost forever#?

Aggghhhhhh, help!!!

Re: Please help - hard drive wiped by virus??

There are only ever two times when you are prompted for a product key
  • When installing Windows, during the second phase

A Windows reinstallation procedure would only begin if you had the Windows CD-ROM in the optical drive, and you inadvertently began Windows setup, which would be an unlikely set of circumstances.
  • When activating Windows XP you have an opportunity to change product keys if you cannot activate.

You system may be prompted for reactivation if there has been a significant hardware change. It’s possible that what you describe was the symptoms of a developing hardware defect, that has now altered Window’s device tree, prompted reactivation.

What messages were being displayed just prior to being prompted for your product key?

Just the normal things it has always said, this system has been wiped of all it's content and is not supplied with an OS (which it was and was working fine)

I have been into DOS and everything is still there, I did a dir run thingy and all my uni work is there on the computer, I just can't get past the product/licence key thing and as I bought it 2nd hand don't even know it.
