HDD fault?

Hi guys.

I'm running Windows 98 on a AMD500K6/2 chip, with an 80gb HDD. Recently, I've noticed what appear to be 2 false partitions on my hard drive. They don't appear to affect my PC's running, but when I try to access them I get a blue screen of death coming up with Fatal Exception errors. The icons that the "drives" are showing look like a document icon. The drive letters are showing as T: and U:. Anyone got any clues about how to get rid of them? If you need any more information I'll do my best.

Re: HDD fault?

interesting, did they just "appear" one day when you booted up?

To remove a partition with windows 98, you need to use "fdisk".

download it here > http://www.23cc.com/free-fdisk/

you'll need to follow the steps on this site ( http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000344.htm ) in order to get rid of the 2 unwanted partitions. make SURE you do not delete the partition with your operating system data on it though.

Re: HDD fault?

I noticed them when I was exploring my system, I don't know how long they've been there, but they're not supposed to be there...I don't think either of them have any data in, I've tried virus scanning them but the scanner can't scan them for some reason. I'm not at my PC at the moment, so I'll try the fdisk tonight when I'm at home.

It is a bit weird, not something I've come across before.

Cheers for the tip, I'll let you know if it works later

Re: HDD fault?

Hmmm...I've just booted my pc, and mysteriously, the unexplained drives have disappeared. I'm thinking they may have been temporary, but am still very puzzled as to what they were from.

I've downloaded fdisk anyway and will keep an eye out for them again.

Cheers

Re: HDD fault?

Hi there welcome to the forum,

It sounds to me as if you have or had a programme that was using ghost drives/ virtual drive/ drive emulator. Something like daemon tools. Some programmes create a fake disk on the hard drive to use whilst you are using the programme this makes sure that the programme has direct access to the disk without caching or overwriting. When you shut down your pc you stopped the programmes process.

Thus the drive disappeared. Usually these drives are not seen but for some reason windows assigned drive letters to the ghost drives and that is why you could see them.

If this persists better to do a reinstall of windows. This can be caused if you are using hacked or cracked software as well.. Hope this helps Loz
