Well SATA and RAID will be much faster than a standard ATA connection, but if you still want ATA i can understand.

I like Western Digital, have been using them for eyars. Seagate is also a brand i trust, they seem to be the pioneers in the hard drive world.

Other people are also Maxtor fans. But jsut so you know, you will get responses from people stating, "i had a [insert brand name here] for 2 days and it fried on me. WORST BRAND EVER DON'T BUY!" this is to be expected. Just stick with name brands and dont be intimidated by other peoples horror stories.

I was told Western Digital makes terrible drives that fail in less than a year. I have owned many WD drives, and not a single one has died on me. I've been using this 80GB one for well over a year and its in tip top shape

Re: Can u tell me a good hard drive for a newbie..

I have a Serial ATA (SATA) drive which is a Maxtor 9 160gb and is very good. Bought it for about £70's if i remeber correctly a few months back and cant fault it. If your motherboard supports SATA then go for this, as faster and the newest interface at the moment (as far as im aware) so best to try and keep with the technology! ;D

Re: Can u tell me a good hard drive for a newbie..

I would go with the line of Western Digital's ATA 7200 rpm hd's, they are nice and fast and seem to be the most stable (all brands of HD's can be defective and crash because they are so intricate in their mechanisms) and not having cacheing problems since you are intimitated with SATA and RAID. But, SATA is not as alien as you may think and very, very fast, the connector just looks different.

Re: Can u tell me a good hard drive for a newbie..

To Be quite honest most good companies are the same..

So any drive by Seagate- maxtor- Western digital- Toshiba- Samsung or Quantum will be very good. It is important to buy a good brand and make sure you get the cover from the shop u buy it from... Also the shop that you are buying from can give you some good advice on what product is best for you. If you can understand SATA then this is what i would go with as ITEK said its not so hard 2 understand and its a different connection... here is a good place to get SATA and SAS explained http://www.digit-life.com/articles2/...index.htmlÂÂ! Thanks Digi Life! Loz

Re: Can u tell me a good hard drive for a newbie..

Brand should not matter much.....but stay away from anything labeled "generic"...that would be fake crap stuff.

As to SATA and ATA, they are just connection types, like SCSI or whatever else. RAID it a Redundant Array of Independant Drives, and it refers to a setup of drives that can do many different things. (only for 2 or more HDDs)

This is pretty much what everybody else said, isn't it? : Oh well, what the heck ;D
