My IP information & Security

Hi Guys,

Paranoid Newbie here

On an alternative forum Whathifi.com, I was advised by a forum moderator, that I have 2 accounts setup. Which is true as I forgot name and password i used originally, so a new account was set up.

However am now bit worried, I think this info must generate from my IP address, are Moderaters entitled to this information?

Am I right to believe, he can only find that out by my IP address? As I have new name and new email address...I asked how he got that information but still no reply? So really worried..

If so, is there anything he can access with my personal IP address?
Account details
Internet History/cookies/cache
Online bank statements

Thanks in advance

Hi

You don't have anything to worry about.

It is very common for forums to keep track of IP addresses in order to stop spam etc. Having your IP address does not mean you are any more likely to be a victim of some online crime than you are usually.

IP addresses are only really like phone numbers. You will be giving out your IP address more than you think. Everytime you send an email your IP address is sent, whenever you go to a website there statistics package will probably track it.

Obviously you should make sure you are protected as you alway should with suitable anti-virus and firewall etc, but you shouldn't need to worry past that.

I hope this helps, if you need any further help feel free to contact me.

Many Thanks

Leo
