Help with a Trojan? please...
Hello
I have McAfee total protection (supposedly!) & spybot installed on my sons laptop. I noticed that he was getting alot of pop ups even with pop up blockers enabled, specifically a poker one & also a spyware detected (winantispy.com) type which McAfee site advisor detects as red. Also, the settings in the internet options keep on automatically changing themselves to accept all cookies. And now, staring today, I can't open most applications like Spybot or setup programs (nothing happens when I double click). On startup, McAfee detects & removes a Trojan found in C:\Documents and settings\My Name\Local Settings\Temp\snfjvkte.exe. (I don't seem to be able to locate the folder named Local Settings either) McAfee describes it as generic.dx Trojan (if this helps?). If I restart the computer, I am quickly able to start spybot but during the scan it terminates itself. Please can someone advise? |

Hiya
It seem to be virus, but not trojan. A trojan would not let you know when it is working. For my point of view, you should restart your laptop, when it was just switched on, press and keep pressing the key F8 many times before the os be loading, access the Safe Mode Then you might be able to have a full scan of your system by your anti-virus software, coz the virus/ torjan could not startup automaticly on the safe mode Good luck |

Hello
thanks for your reply, your right, it is a virus. I'm actually quite some way into the process of removing it, the details of my progress can be found here: Trojan? It's an incredibally difficult virus to remove, I've been at it now for 2 days (solid). If you read the other threads in the link above you'll see what I've been doing so far & may be able to help me from where I'm upto... Thanks again! ![]() |

Well, I have read all the threads you showed me.
I found the problem is really serious. And you were advised to install some other softwares. When the pop ups happend, press ctrl+shift+esc together. On the task manager, click "task", and watch which task remaining more CPU resources. If it was an unusual task you do not know, just try to terminate it. As I mentioned, you've tried to login to the safe mode, but nothing was changed when you switched to the normal mode. My suggestion, you could try to download an other free anti-virus software for temporary use. Because I think your McAfee is insufficient to fix your system. Still, safe mode is always the best enviroment to solve safety problems. If you do not enjoy solving this problem, I also suggest you to restore your important data to another storage device, format your computer C drive, and re-install a new system. It is the simplest way and it could avoid the 'sequelae' of virus either. Hope that help! |

Thanks for your advice my friend, I was nearly going to format.
In the end someone helped me to fix it & my son will be very happy in the morning - he's only 9 & was getting pornography pop-ups! I hate the people who make these virus'. It was Java that let the virus in, if you haven't done already, uninstall Java & install the latest version as there's a virus about which is manipulating a weakness in Java. (my son plays on-line Java games) Glenn |
