Re: Password protect a burned dvd

I would say most of us see a bad idea in the making when we see it.

Don't get me wrong: Locking down your Porn is a good idea but lets get a few things before we come up with the how of it:

1) Encrypt the data with gpg ( or the like ).
Upside:
  • Strong encryption

Downside:
  • Any encryption worth doing is very CPU intensive. You are probably looking at a day to encrypt a full DVD's worth of data.
  • And depending on chunk size, if you have any corrupted sectors, you could lose quite a bit
  • System restore would take a very long time and be a convoluted process

2) Password protect compression file
Upside:
  • On top of the benefits that encryption will give you, this will give you a smaller file to work with

Downside:
  • All the bad things about encryption appy here
  • Not only are we unecrypting the data now, we are uncompressing it. All 5gigs
  • Depending on the encryption, 1 failed chunk could cost you the entire archive

In short, there is no real safe way to lock down that much data using software mechanisms, and the things you can do would make restoring the system a pain in the ass.

Now, what I'd recommend is this:

1) Burn 2 dvds ( same data, twice ), store these two dvds in seperate locations.
2) Store 1 dvd on site in a fireproof safe
3) Send the second dvd to your parents, and have them store it in a fireproof safe

The real question is why do you need this much security? If it's that big of a concern, then a few hundred bucks on a couple firesafes is a justifable cost ( and likely a business expense ).

Re: Password protect a burned dvd

To put a password on your secret, private files iasnt easy, but it is doable...

Welcome to ItsAllPC, by the way...

FIRST, You'd need to download a peice of DVD burning software that supports password rencryption. I Don't personally know of any, but somebody on here might.

Another option is to use a ZIP program to compress the file, this way is easy to add password, but again, you will require the coprrect software, and again, I don't know whichwill do it. although, you could try WinZip.

Re: Password protect a burned dvd

no

This is what happens using a winzip password protected DVD or CD

• user holds down shift while putting in CD
• user has autorun disabled
• user closes password program
• user accesses CD via CMD

I would highly prefer Winrar or the info i provided above.

Winzip protected items are easy to access

What I ws thinking was, Win Zip the actual movie file, (either AVI or whatever), password protect the zip file, then put it on a CD or DVD. This way it can only be used on a PC/laptop by the password holder.

I don't understnd either of your posts...

But If you re sure it is a bad idea idea then ok..ÂÂ!

You say WinZip is a bad password protection idea... But if the DVD falls into the wrong hands, nobody is gonna know what is on it, so nobody is gonnaÂÂ! care about getting somebody to hack into it...?

Re: Password protect a burned dvd

sorry i was in a hurry

ok, i will try to explain I backed my whole computer up onto about 6 different DVD's using winzip then I password protected it and then my friend (was my friend) took them and loaded it onto a computer of his and all he had to do was, disable autorun, closes password program, accesses CD via CMD..

But then I redid all of it using Winrar password protect program and no matter what whenever he tried to get into the disc it prompted for password...

PS- The program I posted above is way better...

Or get the free version of WinRAR

EDIT: to what you added, he wants to protect it and Winzip doesnt really protect it I bet my 5 YO brother could open it if it was protected with WinZIP, just because it is like a note that pops up and doesnt cause any changes

There is no user-encryption available as part of the DVD standard. There is CCS Encryption, but this is designed as copy protection and will not prevent any DVD playing hardware from decrypting the video content.

I'm afraid that you're simply going to have to keep your home made amateur porn under conventional lock and key, if you want to be able to view it on a conventional DVD player.
