Security-Software-Bundle

What software can I use to protect my pc from viruses, trojans, spam and so on? There is so much software to buy but I'd rather just get one programme to protect my pc from all these things. Does anyone know about a good bundle?

Re: Security-Software-Bundle

There isn't really a good bundle, but you're definitely on the right track wanting minimal solutions. Many people mistakenly think they are better protected by installing every application they can find. The results of this are very amusing.

For virus scanner, Norton Antivirus (NOT internet security!) or Trend PC-Cillin are a good choice. For spyware cleaner, Lavasoft Ad-Aware or Spybot S&S.

Be aware that there a lot of people that will point you toward obscure and little known virus scanning software. I'm not sure why this is...I think it must be the thrill of thinking that you've found a gem in the rough. I've found these solutions to be dependable at a professional level.

Re: Security-Software-Bundle

I use Norton Internet Security and I am happy with it.

You get the regular Norton Anti Virus, a firewall and a few other modules that protect your PC from all the bad programs out there, spyware and adware included. You also get a spam filter, a program that targets phishing attempts and something called "privacy control" that prevents you from accidentally giving away your credit card info.

It's all designed for the basic user, easy to install, setup and use.

Symantec, like AOL and other bloated companies, has a tendency to buy up good products and ruin them, so itsallPC would caution you against using anything else they sell, especially Norton Internet Security.

Re: Security-Software-Bundle

uh, syphus, how come you're against Norton Internet security?

Since you recommend their AV it doesn't seem to be anything like a good ol' anti-microsoft-stance ;D

Like I said, I've had no trouble with it and it's effective for all I can tell. (i.e. my PC still lives.)

Because It Installs a good Anti-Virus, as well as the dumbest personal firewall ever made, which blocks absolutely everything It shouldnt, and doesn't like to be tweaked with... Plus other reasons that I'm not sure about myself.

As MidiMoto said, it's bloatware. It's not intuitive, it's over simplified and it's invasive. I've seen many users accidentally block applications from the internet or lock it out completely. It is also rather difficult to properly remove.

It's yet another example of Symantec buying another company and smothering their well developed solutions. Firewalls should be rule based with an advanced configuration interface, or simple filters. Norton Internet Security is neither.

I am also using Norton Internet Security and I was impressed with the firewall, because most of the work was done automatically; i.e. the firewall was able to detect the applications that should be on the internet. And I never had an app losing its internet access afterwards, either.

Re: Security-Software-Bundle

Norton is not recomended for slower machine or insuffciency of RAM. Usually a inupgraded laptop should have 256 MB. Norton will make it slower because Norton has multiple protections and take a lot of memory once you start your machine.
Actually McAfee is under the same company with Norton, both from Symantec too. I don't recomend McAfee because it can't detect some spywares...Curently I'm using Norton and it performances well and excellent. It almost block every malicious...
