Re: What is the Best Firewall and Anti Virus?

AVG Antivirus (Free Edition)

I don't use a firewall, never needed one.

I cna also recommend Spybot Search and Destroy

and

AdAware 6.0 SE

All free, all good.

Re: What is the Best Firewall and Anti Virus?

My opinions on this matter, as usual, seem to conflict with everyone else’s. I’ve voiced them before, here.

I'd go with Norton Antivirus or Trend Micro PC-Cillin for anti-virus software, and Ad-Aware SE Personal or Spybot S&D for anti-spyware. There was once good Firewall software available, but today, it’s all bloat-ware. Many people have routers or other WAN gateway structures, which act directly or inherently as firewalls anyway.

Re: What is the Best Firewall and Anti Virus?

I agree with Syphus.. sort of..

I had AVG for about a year then I switched to Norton anitvirus this year and it removed a load of Trojans that I didnt even know about, and it points out spyware and adware that Ad-Aware SE cannot find.

However Norton gets bundled with the worst firewall ever built, which is a real pain to get off, I can't stand it..

Re: What is the Best Firewall and Anti Virus?

Ah see, there’s Norton Antivirus (), and there’s Norton Internet Security (). The latter, I would recommend only to my arch-nemesis.

That firewall was once called Conceal PC Firewall, and was a powerful, if technical and difficult for the inexperienced to use. Then Norton bought it, like they have so many other excellent products, rendered it down to near-non functionality and bolted a fluffy UI onto it, like they have so many other blah blah blah bling bling blah.

I hate Norton really. Shower of bastards. NAV is their only redeeming product.

Re: What is the Best Firewall and Anti Virus?

I was told by my local IT expert that a firewall built into your router is the best thing to get..

Re: What is the Best Firewall and Anti Virus?

Absolutely.

That's a real firewall, as opposed to a personal software firewall. Hardware firewalls are nearly impossible to defeat, and don't malfunction. Most routers have implicit firewalls.

Re: What is the Best Firewall and Anti Virus?

As good as any other router/firewall. Except that it's Netgear, which aren't really known for their fantastic networking products.

Re: What is the Best Firewall and Anti Virus?

A-squared is also a good and free anti-virus scanner, but I agree with most of the other posts about ad-aware, spybot, and AVG. But I have quit using AVG since getting A-squared.

Re: What is the Best Firewall and Anti Virus?

Norton Anti Virus and McAfee actually as the remmended anti-virus for Windows XP. But I'm preferer to Norton Anti Virus. It's because it's virus definitions alway updated compare to other brand of anti-virus. Some anti-virus also are using Norton's virus definitions so from the point they will slower than Symantec Company.

Norton's is good (NOT Excellent) for virus detection BUT PISS POOR for spyware detection! This is my experience:

I have been using Norton's Internet Security for 402 days now and kept the virus definitions updated daily.

However, lastweek it spent an hour scanning my 600,000+ files, and found no viruses, trojans and spyware. However, after reading the post 'How Not To Get Hacked' by Nilavan (O4G) (see below) I decided to follow his advice.

After running Spybot Search and Distroy and Adaware SE2007 I discovered the following shit on my system:

Spybot found (all red entries):
AdRevolver (2)
Advertising.com 1
Casale Media 1
Double Click 1
Fast Click 1
Hit Box 8
Hits Link 1
Market engines 1
Media Plex 1
Statcounter 1
TagASaurus 1
Tradedoubler 1
warezP2p 1
WebTrendslive 1
Zedo

Ad-Aware found (after a 2 hour scan in safe mode):
Coulomb Dialer (critical)
173 instances of spyware!

So my advice to you is if you decide to use one of the two best anti virus software (Nortons or Mc Afee), please also use Spybot AND Adaware SE and follow Nilavan's advice below:

'How Not To Get Hacked' by Nilavan (O4G)

1 Stop using Internet Explorer and make the switch to Opera, it's more secure, plain and simple.

2. Get Spybot Search and Destroy or Spyware Doctor and immediately update it.

3. Get Adaware SE and immediately update it.
(Use both as a 1-2 punch on infected client computers and between the two there's not much they won't kill)

4. Update your anti virus

5. Boot into safe mode and run all three scans

6. While the scans are going check your registry (Click start --> Run and type regedit to get intot he registry) and look in HKEY_CurrentUser/software/microsoft/windows/currentversion/run & HKEY_Local_Machine/software/microsoft/windows/currentversion/run. Verify that all programs listed are legitimate and wanted.

7. If or when your antivirus scan comes across anything, search for that file name in your registry and delete it.

8. Use explorer to go to the windows/system32 folder and sort by date. If you haven't already done so, make sure you can see the entire file names. click Tools --> Folder Options and unclick the box labeled "Hide extensions for known file types" and under Hidden files and folders click "Show hidden files and folders." However, make sure you choose "Hide protected operating system files" so you don't accidentally remove anything that would cripple your computer.. You are looking for recent files with names ending with .exe and .dll that look suspicious. Major culprits will have gibberish names such as alkjdlkjfa.exe.

9. Once you can get clean scans in safe mode, reboot in normal mode and scan all over again. If you can't get a clean scan in regular mode then you have something more persistant that could take more research.

10. Make sure your firewall doesn't have strange exceptions.

11. If you suspect anything that is going wrong with your computer is the action of a stalker, on a more secure system change all your passwords.

12. If your system has been specifically targeted and hacked you can never be 100% sure that your system is no longer compromised so start with 11, make backups of personal files on the infected system and format and re-install Windows.
